You don't need a boat to get amongst quality flathead. Some of the best flats in the country are walkable, and plenty of anglers overlook them because they assume you need to be floating to fish them properly.

The trick to land-based flats fishing is working the drains and channels you can actually reach, and fan-casting systematically instead of walking straight past good water. Low tide is your friend here, it exposes the structure and shows you exactly where the fish have been holding.

A realistic prawn profile like the Tail Dancer 3D Prawn is perfect for this style of fishing. It matches what's naturally moving across the flats and gets eaten by flathead that see plenty of real prawns but not much else.

Everyone reaches for a soft plastic when flathead season fires up, but there's a technique most estuary anglers barely touch, trolling a hardbody along the drop-offs and channel edges where the bigger fish tend to sit.

A shallow diving hardbody with a tight, shimmering action covers a stretch of drop-off far quicker than casting ever could, and it keeps working the whole time it's in the water rather than only on the retrieve. Run one back through a channel edge on a diving depth of a metre and a half to three metres and you're putting it right in front of fish that plenty of anglers never get a look at.

It's a genuinely different way to search a system, and on a day when the plastics have gone quiet, swapping over can flip the session.

Two new colours just landed on the Rattle Minnow, and they're built for the run into summer.

Kryptonite is a semi-transparent body with a high UV chartreuse back and glow-in-the-dark UV eyes, hit it with a UV torch before you cast and watch it glow. Mullet runs semi-transparent too, with a blue and silver fleck through it for a more natural baitfish look.

Two very different looks, same Rattle Minnow sound, scent and tail thump underneath. We think these are going to hit the spot over the next few months.

At AFTR, that's exactly who you'll be talking to on the stand.
