Ever tried monotasking?

The complete opposite of chasing your tail, trying it do 10 things at once, monotasking has some very cool benefits:

✔️The singular focus enables you to increase productivity

✔️Gives your brain a break from jumping from one thing to another

✔️Keeps you right in the present, fully engaged in what you’re doing

✔️ Calms your farm - less overwhelm and less stress

If you ask me, grandma hobbies like crochet are the ultimate monotasks. How good!

A new pattern underway, and yep the sketchbook’s looking rough, but trust the process. 😂

This often comes up in classes… mostly as a joke, but still interesting.

“I thought crochet was meant to be relaxing.”

And it is. I promise. Pinky promise. 🤞

It’s just that learning the basics takes a bit of practice and time.

It’s like learning to drive. At the beginning you’ve got a million things going on all at once. Your hands are trying to work together, you’re thinking about where the yarn goes, where the hook goes, and then there’s this thing called tension.

There’s a bit going on.

And that’s why it takes practice. A few goes, at least.

These coasters were all made in under two hours by people who’d never picked up a crochet hook before. That’s pretty amazing if you ask me.

The good news is it doesn’t take long before it all starts to come together.

My favourite part of every class is watching that moment when it clicks. You can actually see it happen. Suddenly their hands start finding a rhythm, they’re not having to think quite so hard about every movement.

It might not feel that way to them yet, but I can see it every single class. And it’s one of my favourite parts of teaching.

Ps. Thanks for having us Genki Arts and Crafts Cafe 🫶🏼 Fab venue!

“I want to learn to crochet, but where do I start?”

My best advice? Keep it simple.

All you really need is a hook, some yarn, a tapestry needle and a couple of stitch markers. I usually recommend a 4.5mm hook and 8ply cotton for beginners.

One really good to know: crochet feels a bit awkward at first. Your hands are learning a completely new skill, so don’t expect perfect stitches straight away. It takes a little practice for everything to click.

And make sure you follow a good step-by-step video tutorial. Being able to see how to hold your hook and yarn… and watch exactly where the hook goes, makes learning so much easier. You can pause, rewind and replay the tricky bits as many times as you need.

If you’d rather learn in person, I also run beginner crochet classes on the Gold Coast.

You’ll find beginner tutorials, kits and class info via the link in my bio. 🧶

I just love teaching crochet (obvs). But the best bit?
Meeting the fab people who come to my classes.

See, learning to crochet is the best. But getting back to real, face-to-face connection and ditching the doom-scroll for a few hours? That’s priceless.

Shout out to our amazing venue Carafe Wine Australia 🍷👏
