Wonderful to be offering this instrument for sale.
*Tasmanian bassed Philip Smith is one of the most respected Instrument and Bow makers in Australia and this double bass is a great example of his high-quality workmanship.
*This stunning original model is built from high-quality European timbers and his scroll is crowned with his own crafted C extension. Like all of his Basses, it has an easy responsive and feeling to play.
*Philips instruments don't often come up for sale on the mainland such is the demand, so if you're in the market for a professional quality double bass this is well worth trying out.
*String length 104cm (41")

Amazing opportunity.
This large Panormo “style” double bass has a huge sound to match its body size.
However, it has a small string length under 41" inches!
An instrument that would fit any orchestral soundscape or a Paul Chambers style fat jazz ensemble sound!
Featuring; Deep ribs, carved back, long corners, and a scroll with brass plates handmade machine heads. (Would be an ideal candidate for an extension too).
In brilliant condition and has been well looked after.
This much loved instrument arrived in Australia from England more than 20 years ago with its original origins likely to be from Hungary. Intriguingly labelled "Trusiano", which is the original Sicilian family name for the Panormo instrument making dynasty.
A truly unique double bass looking for a new musical journey. Contact us to book your appointment.

RARE FIND!
Made in France 1949 by the family of Collin Mezin, this instrument has been kept in a brilliant immaculate condition. A remarkable piece of history, which we are genuinely thrilled to be offering.

Violins and cellos from this firm have periodically passed through our workshop but this is the first time we have ever had the privilege of providing a double bass. Complete with its original certificate #3 no less.

This instrument retains its originality in several meaningful places, including the rosewood fingerboard and nut, (subtly extended to suit modern soloistic playing), and with the original workshop intact machine heads. The scroll features a hollowed pegbox, with dramatically sloped narrow shoulders, and a flat back in brilliant condition.

I would describe this bass as a soloist’s dream - ready to meet Bottesini or Koussevitzky with confidence and audacity!

In thumb position, it offers a bright, singing quality with a depth that remains unmistakably “bass,” yet with a lyrical sonority reminiscent of Collin‑Mezin cellos. In the words of our showroom manager, “it is an instrument that, in the right hands, rewards curiosity and invites expression.”
