NZAT members Liam, Jacob and Mason headed into the Mt Aspiring area earlier this month to check out a handful of potential new lines. Poor snow conditions and access challenges meant a change of plans, but good gear and a flexible mindset go a long way in the mountains. A circuit of the Bonar Glacier and a lunchtime lap on the Chocolate Fish route made for a pretty worthwhile alternative.

From 1997 to now, the Prophet Jacket has seen plenty of winters. Different colours, different landscapes, a lifetime of stories.

It’s evolved with the times, but it’s always been built for the same thing: getting outside when the weather would rather you stayed in. From its first appearance in our apparel range to the version hanging in stores today, it’s been shaped by decades of experience and mountains of cold, wet field testing.

Not all puffer jackets are built the same. The biggest difference? What’s inside.

🪶 Down insulation is all about efficiency. It offers an exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio, meaning you get a lot of warmth without a lot of bulk. It also packs down small, making it a favourite for travelling, hiking, alpine adventures, and cold, dry conditions where every gram counts.
What to shop: the Halo, Nebula and Sundowner Jackets.

🌧️ Synthetic insulation is built for versatility. Unlike down, it continues to insulate when damp and dries quickly, making it a great option when you’re heading into wet, humid or unpredictable weather. Think winter hikes with a questionable forecast and everyday wear through the wetter months.
What to shop: the Pulsar Plus and Uber Insulated Jackets.

Alone on Makalu.

Back in 2023, climber Matty Scholes set off for Makalu, the 5th highest mountain in the world.

Ahead of the expedition, Matty worked alongside our design team to develop a custom down suit built specifically for the demands of the climb. When you’re engineering gear for an 8,485m climb, the small details become (very) big details.

These photos are from that original expedition, where the summit wasn’t conquered... but the mountain wasn’t done with Matty yet. Two years later, he returned to Makalu with the same suit, but an even more ambitious goal: a solo ascent without supplementary oxygen.

Meet the Rift. An ultra-light 40L pack engineered for efficiency.
 
At just 900g with the frame (790g without), it’s built to carry 13-16kg loads without weighing you down. The main fabric uses ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene ripstop (say that 3 times fast... UHMWPE for short), pairing abrasion resistance with weather protection in a seriously lightweight build.
 
Add 7L of external storage across nine pockets and UltraStretch™ stash zones, and everything you need stays within reach. Plus (yes, there’s more!) a dual purpose ice-axe or walking pole carry loop.

From the Southern Alps to French Alps, the is carrying the same approach into a different range. Adapting when conditions turn, linking pitches when plans change, and stepping onto bigger, longer lines with the support to see them through.

A partial ascent on the Capucin became 18 pitches across multiple routes, while further along the range, a north face objective unfolded over two days—rock, ice, and long mixed ground linking through to the Aiguille Verte. In between, perfect granite on the Pointes Lachanel and Adolphe Rey offered something more straightforward: clean cracks, good conditions, and time spent making the most of it.
