The first time I went to Tokyo I was prepared to encounter wild and novel vending machines around every corner, and was quietly disappointed to find that 98% of them just contained drinks and the usual things.

Thank goodness I finally stumbled on a canned bread vending machine! I bought a few home for friends, and many years later they still talk about how strangely delicious the emergency Japanese brioche is.
