The first concert I sat in the audience for was Dolly Parton. I was there with my Dad, Mum, little sister and grandparents. She was there with Kenny, but we were there for her. At 10 years old, I was in awe of the tiny glamorous woman on stage with a sparkly red dress, red lips and long red nails, and giant curly blond hair, singing the songs we knew so well. She was strong, funny, and a great storyteller. ‘Coat of Many Colours’ meant so much more when she sang it in person, and little 10yo me felt every word. That night, poring over the program in bed, I decided instead of Disneyland, I wanted to go to Dollywood (still do!).

Since then, I’ve taken inspiration from Dolly the businesswoman, the generous philanthropist, and the Dolly who knew the power that music has for creating connection across all walks of life, as evidenced by the out pouring of love for her. It’s a power my Dad knew too, and this is the Dolly song we thought of when remembering him around this time last year. We’re playing it and other faves from our personal collection, in Dolly’s honour today, as we dream up new ways for our new space connect more people through music. 🦋❤️

August has been a huge month for us: we hit 100k followers on Instagram, we hosted our largest ever listening party in our new shop space, and we moved in (all in the last three weeks,) in time for our 4th birthday! But none of that happens without the support from lovely people in our community. Special thanks to Paula, Cath, Greg, Eb, and our really supportive landlords! And thank you to everyone who has supported us and helped us celebrate music by women, we hope to see you in our new Battery Point shop very soon! ❤️

Last night, Suffragette Records became the Lost Record Store as we celebrated Phoebe Bridgers’ astonishing new album, Lost Weekend, and our biggest community event so far. So big that we surprised everyone by holding the party in what will be our new shop space, right next door! A bunch of beautiful souls joined us for a listen while stars danced across the ceiling. One lucky person took home a signed 7” Lost Boys door prize, everyone got a free poster, and most wandered home with at least one copy of the album.

Lucky for you, we still have copies left of super limited Listening Party Exclusive Zodiacal White Vinyl with embossed sticker, Standard glow in the dark or black vinyl, CDs and cassettes. We also have some bonus black light torches for locals who buy a standard copy on vinyl, and posters for all who purchase a vinyl copy, while stocks last!

More on the new, much bigger, community-friendly shop space as we beam across there in the next couple of weeks, and Suffragette Records finds itself settled into its new home.
