Hi! We're still here šŸ¤—
I've been missing in action the last couple of weeks. I've been knuckling down and powering through my mental health/clinical social worker accreditation. If you're thinking about doing it, the application process is massive!!
I've been fluctuating between feeling that excited about my private psychotherapy practice that I can't sleep and feeling like an imposter who has no idea what they're doing. Its taken a lot of nurturing myself and a lot of 'you know this, you actually do it already, you've got this!' to bring myself back into a place of rational thinking.
Here is a completely unrelated photograph of Oliver. Its actually really hard to photograph him now!

Establish a routine (Supporting Your Child’s Return To School Mini Series)

Over the next few days I’ll be posting a mini-series of ways that you can support your child through this time of uncertainty. So far we’ve covered checking in frequently, being curious about how your child is feeling and accepting that although you mind be ready for them to go back to school, your child may not.

In this mini post I share why establishing a routine is beneficial for children (or anybody) with anxiety and some simple strategies that you can do.

Establishing a structured routine and being consistent is calming for children. It gives them a sense of predictability, so they always know what is coming up and when it is going to happen. Predictable routines reduce the amount of stress that children feel and creates a sense of safety for them. Not to mention that their brain thrives on routine, so it's always good to create healthy habits right from the beginning.

So how can you start a routine full of healthy habits?

šŸ‘‡
ā–ŖļøWake up and go to bed at the same time every day, even on weekends.
ā–ŖļøCreate a night time routine (bathing, getting into their PJs, reading a book) that promotes good sleep hygiene.
ā–ŖļøSpend time together as a family. This could be 15-20 minutes of playtime together, eating dinner together or going out for a walk together. Quality family time helps children to understand the importance of relationships and family and physical exercise is very beneficial for everybody’s physical and mental health.
ā–ŖļøCreate visual prompts to help your children see what is coming up next - a calendar or a routine list can be helpful.

Today, early primary aged children return to their classrooms. If there's one thing that I have noticed is that their anxiety levels are at a high. Right now, its more important than ever that you are there for your children so that they can feel safe and secure in a world full of unknowns. The good news is that your child is incredible and the way that they can adapt to change can show us a thing or two.

Over the next few days I’ll be posting a mini-series of ways that you can support your child through this time of uncertainty.

ā–Ŗļøcheck in frequently,
ā–Ŗļøbe curious about how they are feeling and ā–Ŗļøaccept where they are at right now.

Its been incredibly tough for everybody during the most recent months. We have all had the rug pulled out from under us and we have been forced to change, adapt and then change again in a very short space of time. You might have been itching for the announcement that school will return, but some children might not be so eager and that is perfectly okay.

Right now, its important to check in on them frequently. Ask them how they are feeling and actually listen to what they have to say. Don’t interrupt. Just let them talk. Validate their feelings and tell them it is okay to feel the way that they do and that it is normal. Tell them that you feel anxious, scared or worried too. Ask them if there is something that you can do together when they are feeling scared or worried, like read a book together or do a silly worry dance and make them laugh.

You’ve got this mama!

Did you notice your little one feeling worried today? Send me a DM and tell me what you noticed and how you went about it, I would really like to hear.

Build connection and bake with your kids

Food is incredible. Not only can whole food nurture our body but it has the power to recall memories, take us back in time and build connections with those around us.

After staring in the fridge wondering what I could feed Oliver for breakfast, I chose to give piklets a go.

Back when I was little, piklets were a hit. I remember my mum would set me up with ingredients and a pan and she would show me how to get my piklets looking perfect. My first batch would be the practice batch where you'd typically find them either black or mungled because I accidentally flipped them on one another.

When Oliver is older I hope that we can spend time cooking together, so he can look back as an adult and remember how he would bake things with his mama.

4 Reasons Why You Should Hug Your Children Often

If you’ve been following Ollie Wildling right from the beginning, you would know that outside of Ollie Wildling I work with children who live in foster care and their families. Ive learned how important it is for my children to grow up in a home that’s safe and full of nurturing love.

Sometimes we can get caught up in making sure everything look Insta perfect or thinking that our kids need the best toys on the market that we forget what actually matters most - building those meaningful connections with our children.

I love the cuddles that I have with Oliver. I cherish them because one day he'll grow from a beautiful boy into a man and he won't want hugs from his mama any more. When we spend this special time together I can literally feel the rush of hormones run though my body. Do you feel this also?

You know that hugs make us feel good, but did you know there are so many other benefits to this type of nurturing touch for our children.

1. Hugging has a positive affect on your little one’s brain development. Physical touch that’s nurturing helps your little one’s brain to grow healthy and strong. I’ll share another post about healthy brain development later (because I’m a brain nut). 2. Hugging can help your little one to grow and it boosts their immune system. When we hug our children, there is an increase of oxytocin that is released in your child’s body. Oxytocin helps their body to fight infections AND it promotes physical growth!

3. Hugging reduces stress. You know those feel good hormones? These are actually really good at reducing stress (reducing the amount of the cortisol hormone) in our body. So next time you’re little one is having a ā€˜tantrum’ or needs help managing a big emotion, spend some ā€˜time in’ rather than ā€˜time out’ by giving them a hug.

4. The biggest benefit of all, hugging helps your child to feel loved, safe and secure. Even us adults need hugs for us to feel loved and safe.

So, even though living in this COVID-19 pandemic we are unable to hug others, we can still spend time hugging our children.

Things are changing at Ollie Wildling. Since my label has been on Etsy it’s very clear that the people who are browsing my virtual shelves are shopping for their baby girls šŸ™ˆšŸ˜‚.

What started out as a little label exclusively for baby and toddler boys one year ago, has inevitably grown. You’ll soon find clothing for baby and toddler girls too! Although baby boy and unisex clothing will be my focus.

I’ve had this fabric in my stash for a long time now. I used to sew pinup/rockabilly themed dresses but I wasn’t in love and I had this left over šŸ˜.

I would absolutely love your input!

What clothing should I make out of it?

Which blue goes better? (see the unfiltered image in the comments section!)

Look arrived at Ollie Wildling today!

I have been wanting to add a range of bedding and dƩcor to Ollie Wildling for a little while now after seeing some amazing nursery set ups over on Instagram. After what I call a combination of curiosity, luck and perfect timing, I stumbled across and purchased the most gorgeous fabric I have ever seen.

This is the first print from about five different fabrics that I’ve selected. I’ll be making a collection of cot blankets. These will be backed with a coordinating fabric. I’m thinking mustard or aqua for this one. They will also have a layer in between for extra warmth.

I purchased enough of this print for two cot blankets. If there is enough love for these, I may be able to get my hands on some more fabric and run a pre-order.

It’s finally clicked.

Over the last 12 months I’ve worked hard in building this little brand of mine called Ollie Wildling. For those of you who are new to my brand, my brand’s story starts like many others who launched their business while caring for their newborns on maternity leave. I launched Ollie Wildling as a label for baby and toddler boys because I was frustrated by the lack of options in mainstream stores.

Like my own personal development and my ongoing eagerness to learn, grow and share, I wanted the same for Ollie Wildling but I wasn’t sure how or what direction I wanted to go.

Then COVID-19 happened.

Sales are quiet. Replenishing the shelves in my store isn’t happening, but this time, this experience of living in a pandemic has not been wasted.

I’ve chosen this time as an opportunity for reflection - reflecting upon the past and what I would like for my life, my family and my brand going forward.

Meet Ollie Wildling, a label for baby and toddlers inspired by rich Earthy tones and vintage vibes; a lifestyle of slow, purposeful living, ethical fashion and connection.

Join me as I share my journey of living purposely after surviving a global pandemic.

How to style your favourite summer romper with a few simple accessories.

I’m not sure about you but Oliver has some summer clothes in his wardrobe that I just can’t bring myself to put away just yet. I’m holding onto as many of the summer feels as I can because it all seems like a distant memory.

I feel like we’re told that the clothing that we wear for summer should only be worn in summer and that once the cooler weather hits, that’s it. Ummmm nope. I want Oliver to get as much wear out of these things as I can get!!

In this mini blog post, I’m going to show you how you can style your favourite summer romper for autumn weather with a few simple accessories. Also, a HUGE thanks to Mil and Co for letting me repost their gorgeous photos!

1. A sweet cable knit cardigan. If you know me, I LOVE a good cardigan.

2. Knee high socks. You should have seen hubby’s face when I said to him that I’ve just bought Oliver his first pair of knee high socks.

3. Lace up shoes. These little shoes are on my wish list. Watch this space because they’re going to be an Ollie Wildling staple!

What do you think?

Comment below and tell me your favourite summer clothing that you’re not quite ready to let go of yet.
