On the left is a PVP (Peak Velocity Plot) graph of two, four-way shocks from a Formula 3 race car. Many would think that these two shocks are well matched.

However, on the right is a Force vs Displacement graph of one of them. What it shows is that the Peak Force is the same as the other, but on the way to peak force, things don't work out the right way.

The top left segment of that graph is the start of the compression stroke. There is some movement of the shock where nothing happens. Also, the bottom right segment - Rebound Starting - nothing was happening.

The result would be that the wheel would rapidly move then be restrained, in both Bump and Rebound. Certainly would not improve grip or driver confidence.

The whole point of this post, is to alert people to be wary of only considering PVP graphs. While they can be useful, it's important to consider the underlying data.

To answer the obvious question - the solution was simple. The shock was low on oil and gas pressure. Now improved.
