Too many windows making your home impossible to heat? You don't have to replace them all.

This simple fix involves fitting a panel of rigid insulation board into the lower portion of the window frame, reducing the cold glass area while keeping the light coming in from above.

It costs very little, requires no tradesperson, and makes a real difference to comfort and heating costs.

Garages can get incredibly hot ... and incredibly cold. Did you know you can buy garage door insulation kits?

Installing one will not only keep your garage a more stable temperature, but also reduce the heat or cold that can radiate from your garage into your living areas.

The pipes on your hot water system should all be insulated. After all, hot water often has to travel quite a distance to reach your shower or tap.

If they're not, consider installing lagging on all pipes between the hot water system and the wall of the home. Properly insulated pipes can reduce heat loss when water is in transit, maintain temperatures to help hot water reach your taps more quickly, and reduce water waste waiting for hot water to arrive.

Uninsulated walls are one of the biggest sources of heat loss in Australian homes, making them a significant weak spot worth addressing.

One effective option is blown-in loose-fill glass fibre insulation. An installer pumps it directly into the wall cavity through small holes in the brick or internal lining, filling the space completely, with no major disruption.

A couple of things to keep in mind:
- Blown-in insulation can trap moisture, so consider the risk of condensation with your wall type
- If budget allows, re-wrapping, insulating and recladding is the most thorough solution.

Got a rangehood? Take a look up inside the enclosure. You might have gaps you didn’t know about letting major draughts into your home (main pic.).

For other models, check in cupboards and behind covers to make sure there aren't gaps where the duct enters the wall. In the smaller pics (borrowed from the My Efficient Electric Home FB page) you can see how a facade can hide a major draught issue.
