Sharks! I know it's hard to find one up here in the mountains, but less than 2 hours down the road there are plenty lately - more than I have ever seen in my lifetime of diving! I've been diving saltwater & freshwater, all around the world, for nearly 50 years. The main reason I dive is for the marinelife, I love that it's like another planet down there and I've seen a lot of sharks in my time underwater, with only 2 dives involving interactions with sharks that I would describe as "concerning" at the time - but nothing happened in the end!

Despite my love of all waterlife, including sharks, the events of last week (4 shark attacks in 24 hours), on top of hearing constant feedback online, but also my own personal observations, I believe sharks should definitely be culled in some instances - like when they start killing our children! I've seen all the online comments such as; "Don't get in the water", "it's their territory, what do you expect" etc etc but my view is start culling any areas where there are attacks.

I know some people have very different views but I'd like to hear what others think please?

Have you ever wanted to learn to fly tying?

Local Fly tying Master, Wayne Dixon, has agreed to come out and conduct a 6 hour tying course, if there is enough interest?

Course will be conducted at Moonbah Huts and will involve tying both wet & dry varieties, then testing your creations on the stocked lake in front of the Moonbah Lake Hut and the small section of the Moonbah River within the property: www.moonbahhut.com.au

It will be a weekend course, checking in Friday afternoon/night, anytime from 4pm, with Saturday creating and testing flies. Sunday morning, fishing if desired, with check-out by 10am.

Max 8 persons. Cost (including 2 nights accommodation) will be around $660 per person, depending on final numbers, choice of accommodation etc.

Dates will be confirmed if there is sufficient interest.

Are we all 'awake' to what is going on here (on the subject of our Trout) behind the doors of government and their agencies, as we speak? Do we see what the agenda is of groups like the Invasive Species Council is and even how government agencies that supposedly have our industry at heart are actually beholden to groups like the ISC? I'm curious what percentage of us are aware of the move to eradicate Trout from our waterways entirely and forever?

Eels in the Moonbah!!! Very keen to hear any other people's stories about eels up here in the Snowy Mountains waterways - river or lake?

I caught this one in the upper Moonbah and was then faced with the dilemma of whether to let it go, or not!

I’ve dived all the rivers and lakes in the mountains and never got one on film for some reason! I did have one swim between my legs at Hatchery Bay one night, when I was changing flies under a headlamp and it looked around 6 foot! I also used to catch them on set lines in the Moonbah when I was a kid catching a feed on hunting trips.

Bit of research told me this little eel I had in the net had swum all the way from the Coral Sea (where all Freshwater Eels in Australia are apparently born). This species then swims over 2500km from the Coral Sea before eventually swimming up a river like the Moonbah (via the Snowy of course) to grow into adults.

Eventually they mature and start the journey back to breed (exact location unknown) but scientists now believe it’s somewhere near New Caledonia!!!

In the end I released the Eel, but apparently they are top predators in the water and eat snakes, fish, birds (hope they get a few Cormorants) and even water rats, so hopefully he/she didn't get too many of our fish!

I’ve always been fascinated by mudeyes! When I was a kid in the 70’s Pop took us fishing in summer and whistling foxes in winter 💰

In summer it was usually Eucumbene and on the way up from
Canberra we always stopped at the 4 Mile, just after you turned onto the Adaminaby Road, (Snowy Mountains Highway), and bought a couple of dozen mudeyes off the old bloke who lived in a house there, (can’t remember his name if anybody remembers?).

He got them out of the fridge and we used to put them in a little foam 6 pack sized box between layers of wet newspaper. Sunday morning we’d wake up in the old white canvas tent, (no floor), and half the mudeyes had morphed into dragonflies 😂

When I got to 15 I needed a bit of petrol money to get around town, so Pop lent me his old mudeye net and I headed down to Ginninderra Creek every Friday after school and dragged the net. Before long I was supplying all the tackle shops around Canberra with mudeyes and yabbies making up to $350 a week ($3.50 a dozen in those days and yabbies a buck each) !!! Everybody used to ask "how do you catch them", which seemed weird because I thought everybody knew, but plenty didn't apparently 😎

If this economy doesn't pick up soon I might have to get the old net out again 🤣

Still a bit early in the season most years, but a beautiful spot nonetheless and when it really heats up it's great fun catching a few stunningly colourful tiddlers on a white moth.

I never go up there just to fish, but for a walk, or a bike ride, picnic lunch etc, it's always worth throwing a little rod in the pack for a flick and I have caught the occasional 1 lb'er.
