A couple in the NSW Snowy Mountains makes skis entirely from Australian-grown timber, though manufacturing for the snow industry in a "summer country" comes with its share of challenges.

Jonathan and Steph Paige didn't quite know what they were embarking upon when they decided to make handmade skis out of Australian-grown timber.

"You could probably get a job at a big company in Europe or the US and have somebody show you the ropes," Jonathan Paige said.

"Being here, it was very much just learn as you go, refine, reiterate."

It was in 2019, when the husband-and-wife ski enthusiasts were living in Western Australia — a place far removed from the Australian snow scene — that Jonathan "JP" decided to give ski making a go.

Checklists make me happy 😊

This paperwork is the backbone to every pair of Desert Skis.

Each build follows a step-by-step checklist. Cores, composites, layup sequence, pressing temps, cure times, finishing, tuning. If it matters, it’s on the list. Even individual boards in the core get a number!

Watching the Northern Hemisphere winter kick off always gives me a mix of feelings as it’s warming up here in Australia. I love seeing all the stoke come out as mountains full with snow and people start doing rad things on skis!

I’m lucky to keep working with skis all year round. Building prototypes for next winter and delivering customer orders. All while looking forward to my own trip north in a couple months.
