Some roads surrounding Leonora and Laverton remain closed because of flooding after the wettest September day on record.

Main Roads WA reopened Goldfields Highway between Leonora and Leinster on Tuesday morning and Leonora to Laverton Road later that same day, but some unsealed local government roads remained closed.

Chrysoprase is a green variety of chalcedony. Its famous green colour comes primarily from nickel, present in very small amounts within the stone.

The process generally begins with nickel-rich rocks, often associated with weathering or alteration of ultramafic rocks. Over very long periods, groundwater and other fluids move through these rocks and interact with the minerals they contain.

As the rocks weather, nickel is released into the circulating fluids. Silica-rich fluids can then carry this nickel into cavities, fractures and porous zones within the surrounding rock.

Leonora has recorded its wettest September day on record with 58.8 millimetres of rain yesterday causing flooding and road closures across the northern Goldfields.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jessica Lingard said the previous record was 32.6 millimetres in 1984, with Monday also marking the town’s wettest day since March 2017.

“In that one event we have got our second wettest September on record, and we have had rainfall data in Leonora for 129 years,” she said.

The Goldfields Highway between Leonora and Leinster has reopened, but the Leonora-Laverton Road remains closed, with Ms Lingard saying the trough could remain over the Goldfields into Thursday.
