The Bees Knees Honey

It has been a while...

The Bees Knees Honey is a member of the Brisbane Amateur Beekeepers Society. A group which meets monthly to share knowledge and guidance with both new and experienced beekeepers.

Earlier, the society held a honey tasting event where members could bring along samples of their honey and stories about the nectar sources.

I decided to bring along examples of the color range that my honey undergoes through the seasons. Everyone got to taste from the large jar at the back of the row. This honey was middle in color range and is one of my highest grades of honey.

The event went extremely well with my honey receiving admiring comments about its consistency, taste and the color spectrum that my bees can achieve.

It is currently Ivory Curl Season (Buckinghamia celsissima). These trees are native to North Queensland and thrive as footpath shade trees in Brisbane. Their long white blooms are very attractive to the native pollinators ( and to bees!).

The Honey has a wonderful flavor and scent, often described as being similar to Macadamia Honey. This honey has proven to be extremely popular.

Depending on the amount of rain that occurs during the flowering period; supply of Ivory Curl Season honey may be limited.

Jacaranda Season honey is a light colored thin honey, which is very sweet in taste.

Jacaranda Season in South East Queensland is a very busy time for The Bees Knees Bees, they are very busy collecting the abundant nectar from the Jacaranda's stunning flowers.

My rose form Camellia has put on a spectacular show this year. No two flowers are alike, the colors range from almost pure white to deep red. The flowers look almost like a marbled hard candy with their rich swirls of color.

Even my bee's think the blooms are the bees knees ;) The blooms are pollen heavy providing a good source of nourishment.

Citrus blossoms are a popular event at the Bees Knees. Often the bees are too impatient to wait for the flowers to fully open. The bees are sometimes even pushing each other out of the way.

Here you can see a European honey bee and two native Australian sting-less honey bees loaded down with pollen and nectar on my Lemonade Lemon tree. The tree hums to the sound of the bees , it that highly prized.

Ivory Curl Honey has a unique fruity flavor and comes from a North Queensland native rain forest tree. This tree oddly grows best in Brisbane where it is commonly used as a footpath shade tree.
The trees long white flowers are very popular with the pollinators.

*note: The Bees Knees special honeys are a mixed blossom honey, but the primary blossom is the Ivory Curl blossom.

The Clover that I have over-sown into my lawn to provide winter feed to my bees is in full bloom. I bought a mix of white and red clover. The red clover seeds have grown into large leaved plants with white flowers twice the size of normal white clover.

The field has been hosting a large variety of native pollinators ranging from native bees to butterflies.

Clover is great to grow under fruit trees to help keep down weeds and provide extra food for pollinators. An added bonus is that Clover also acts as a green manure, its deep roots fix nitrogen into the soil.

My bees are currently enjoying a taste of New Zealand, with the Manuka currently in flower. Also flowering early this year is the Pohutukawa or NZ Christmas tree with its large striking flowers. The bees absolutely love the flowers with the tree humming with all its visitors.
