Welcome to the official page of the "Friends of Kapunda Incorporated Pre-loved Bookshop" - a long name for a small, friendly bookshop run by volunteers, selling donated books, with all profits going back to the community.

People come into the shop looking for all kinds of books and we love helping them search our shelves to see if they have been donated. Some people bring in a written list and others look up an author on their phone. Some customers just remember something from a conversation they had ages ago. That can be a bit more tricky! This customer decided they'd better go back and clarify the title......

Happy birthday, Daphne du Maurier! (1907)

"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again".
The opening line of "Rebecca", Du Maurier's most famous work, is renowned for its evocative, haunting quality that sets the novel's tone. It is often cited as one of the most famous first lines ever written.

According to the website www.dumaurier.org singer/songwriter Taylor Swift credits "Rebecca" as the inspiration for her song "Tolerate It". Fortunately for us we can just enjoy the books without having to produce a million-dollar hit song from it.

Happy International Nurses Day!
We thank all nurses, past and present, for their incredible skill, patience, kindness, and care. We wish you a day of co-operative patients, minimal paperwork, and coffee that stays hot until you get a chance to drink it.

International Nurses Day is held on this day each year, honouring the birth of Florence Nightingale. This 1950 biography, written by Cecil Woodham-Smith, is a reminder to have a look in the shop's Collectibles cupboard near the desk. It is a delight to read the writing style of another era. This book begins ...
"It was something new to call a girl Florence. Within fifty years there would be thousands of girls all over the world christened Florence in honour of this baby, but in the summer of 1820, when F***y Nightingale fixed on the name for her daughter, it was new."

Today we celebrate the birthday of Sir Sidney Kidman, born 9 May 1857, one of Australia’s most remarkable pastoral pioneers. Known as the “Cattle King”, Kidman’s vision, resilience and legacy helped shape the nation’s rural history and left a lasting impact on communities like Kapunda.

We invite you to reflect on his extraordinary life and achievements - and to learn more about his story at the Light Country Visitor Information Centre.

On this day in 1860 Scottish author and playwright James Matthew Barrie was born.

Barrie's most famous and enduring work is " Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up". It had its first stage performance on 27 December 1904 at the West End’s Duke of York's Theatre. Although he continued to write successfully, "Peter Pan" overshadowed his other work, and is credited with inventing and popularising the name Wendy. Before his death, Barrie famously gave the rights to "Peter Pan" to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, which continues to benefit from them.
