Dark-based and variegated iris foliage are incredibly popular because they solve the biggest drawback of the standard iris leaves and their bloom cycle.

Variegated iris feature vertical stripes of cream, bright white, or yellow running down their sword-like leaves. They are a favourite among gardeners for the added bonus of providing visual interest once the iris finishes blooming.

While variegated irises bring light to the garden, dark-based or Purple-Based Foliage (PBF) irises offer something entirely different: mood, depth, and drama. This genetic trait where deep burgundy, violet, or near-black pigments saturate the base of the fans and bleed into the leaf turns the plant into a dynamic focal point long before the first flower bud appears.

Would you grow an iris for the appeal of leaf colour in your garden? 🤍💚🖤💜

If so be sure to look out for these varieties this Spring in our New Season Catalogue!

We were back out in the field again today, continuing our way through the never-ending w**ding. But this afternoon, we were treated to something a little more interesting when we looked up. ☁️🌈

These incredible clouds were showing off some beautiful pastel colours, with hints of pink, green and purple appearing amongst the wispy formations. We couldn't resist stopping to take a few photos!

Not a bad view to finish a day of w**ding.

Has anyone else spotted some unusual clouds lately?

We look at where we have been and keep looking forward to where we are going.

✨Talk about making progress! We started with 75 rows ahead of us, and after a serious amount of hard work and clearing out the w**ds, we are officially down to the final 14 rows! 🧑‍🌾

🌱It’s amazing what happens when you put your head down and just keep moving forward.

Looking back at where we started shows how much ground we've covered, but looking ahead at that finish line is the best feeling ever.

We are digging deep to smash out these last few rows as we have both become unwell the past couple days, Bailey has a cold and Mel has lost her voice! 🚀💪

Have a great weekend, you know where we will be!!

It does look like we are making progress in the field, slowly though! 16 rows yet to w**d!

The field is coming alive with the warm sun baring on us. ☀️

This time of year is always difficult to evaluate stems as the warm weather comes quickly the stems stretch upwards. After a few days a cold snap comes along, temperatures drop dramatically and the stem will stop stretching and kink in unusual ways. Then stretch when the weather warms again. This pattern continues until we receive consistent warm weather.

While we are pulling w**ds we are noticing the changes that occur when bloom time is near.

While we have been w**ding we are taking notice of our varieties and their growth.

The pictured Aril Bred's have bloom stems in amongst their leaves. 👀

We are so looking forward to seeing our seedlings blooming again and sharing our love of iris with you all. XX

Bloom of the Week #14 – Love Is On Fire

This week's Bloom of the Week is Love Is On Fire, and with a name like that, it seems fitting to feature it as spring starts to warm up!

Love Is On Fire is normally one of the first tall bearded irises to bloom here at Smokin Heights, so we're always keeping an eye out for the first signs that flowering season is on its way.

And we can already see stems beginning to form!

It's always exciting to spot those first signs of bloom after the quieter winter months. We still have a little wait ahead, but the beginning of another iris season is starting to feel very real.

Who's ready for iris season?

The wait is almost over! 🌸

As September settles in and our beautiful Bearded Irises show off their gorgeous new growth, we are busy behind the scenes getting the field ready to welcome you all back to Smokin Heights.

We are so excited to announce that our gates will be open every Sunday, 10am-4pm throughout October!

There is nothing quite like wandering through the rows, surrounded by a rainbow of blooms, and choosing a selection of freshly dug bare-root rhizomes to take home to your own garden. Pots of iris and garden fillers will also be available for purchase on our open days.

Planning a visit with a club, society, or a big group of fellow plant lovers? We would love to host you! We are booking private visits by appointment for large groups on alternative days, so you can enjoy the field at your own pace.

Keep a close eye on our page over the coming weeks as we share sneak peeks of what’s in bloom.

✨For group bookings or to explore our latest varieties online, head over to the Smokin Heights Website or send us a message right here.

We can't wait to share the magic of the new season with you all! 💜
