My artists statement for this one is:

This work reflects the quiet, often unseen rhythms of life within the pastoral industry, where care is expressed through routine, and responsibility is grounded in meeting the basic needs of the animals. Here, cattle gather to drink from a freshly scrubbed trough, a simple but essential task during the heat of summer. Despite being minimally handled across large acreages, there is an unspoken trust in this moment as they approach the clean water as it refills.

Created in pastel over an ink background, the piece embraces contrast in both process and feeling. The looseness of the ink is allowed to remain visible in the sky and trough, echoing the fluidity and openness of the landscape, while the pastel brings forward the softness, presence, and individuality of the cattle. Through this balance, the work captures a fleeting, grounded moment where care, trust, and environment quietly intersect.

Come visit me over the June long weekend for the very first 🎨✨

🗓 30 May – 1 June
📍 Based at the Avon Valley Arts Society, Northam

I’ll be set up alongside a three fellow artists in the AVAS space as part of this brand new open studio trail through the Avon Valley. You’ll be able to see artworks in person, chat with artists, explore creative spaces, and make a whole weekend of it.

As one of the organisers, it’s honestly really exciting (and slightly surreal) to finally see this project come together 😊

I’ll have artworks on display, works in progress, prints, cards and probably paint/pastel on my clothes at some point during the weekend.

Come say hi, support regional artists, and explore the creativity happening across the Avon Valley 💛

Catch up post from last Wednesday, my first get back to painting in prep for the upcoming exhibitions and also our very first Arts Trail in the region

I snuck up to the top of Centenary Hill at the end of the day to catch the fading light and the many colours of this time of the season. Dry wheat stubble, freshly ploughed earth, greening paddocks and burn lines from last year's canola crop in the foreground. It was so dark by the time I finished I really had no idea of what I ended up with until I looked at it the next morning. Pleasantly surprised 😆

Yesterday's painting was at a friend's farm whose house site offers incredible views. Being up on a hill made getting the perspective a little tricky, I was looking down on the first paddock. The Salmon Gum in in the foreground was my main goal with all it's glowing bark, these trees are so beautiful.

With a couple of local art exhibitions coming up and nothing to enter I've been pushing myself to paint a bit over the past week. Today I stopped at a spot that I was originally drawn to because it had a tractor and silo in the paddock near the shed but then I found that I can't paint tiny tractors and silos and the composition was terrible so I ended up removing it altogether. It's currently overcast which makes the colours dull but I am enjoying the muted colours of this turn in the season so it wasn't too bad in the end.

I did not do this magical place justice with this paint out. With quick changes in the weather from raining to golden sunshine, I couldn't quite keep up. And then as I was finishing, full reflections came out on this mirror like water and changed the whole direction of the painting. We have been staying at a lodge down in Strathblane which is situated right on the banks of Port Esperance. The tide was out and all the oyster covers rocks exposed and while sitting on the pontoon I was painting from a ray came gliding through the shallows. It's incredibly quiet here a lovely contrast to the tourist filled places we have been visiting during the day.

A change of scenery today painting today at Dove Lake at Cradle Mountain. We sat near the boatshed which had the mountain in the background but I couldn't quite fit it in with the small boards I'm using. The scrub is a lot lower up here and full of flower. The boatshed was a challenge for me, I did get a bit wrapped up in tiny brush strokes which is something I try to avoid. The sky was an incredible blue (Kingston blue, straight from the tube) with lovely big puffy white clouds. The kids are done with walks for the day so we'll be heading out soon and on to our next stop.

☕🎨 Best coffee in town… and now some local art to go with it!

I’ve just hung a new display of my paintings at .and.co so you can enjoy the aroma of freshly brewed coffee while taking in some local scenes.

This collection features scenes from around Northam, as well as a sneaky one from Toodyay, with plenty more waiting at home to be rotated through in the coming months.

Next time you’re grabbing your coffee fix, take a moment to look around—you might just spot your favourite view on the wall!

Back into plein air painting again today after a couple of months break. Today we went to , a beautiful venue full of historical buildings and stunning gardens. There were so many spots we could have painted, but we ended up here, where the sunlight was streaming between the buildings. The building seen in this painting is the back wall of an added on section to 'The Inn', apparently, this was the first licensed premises in WA. Built in 1833, it served as a general store and post office for the Northam-Toodyay area as well as being a wayside tavern.
Our group of painters were treated to some additional company as some kids came and painted with us, and also got to listen to other youth playing on the piano amd singing in the main house.
What a beautiful way to spend the afternoon ❤️
