Wow. What a night. ✨

Katoomba Street truly came alive on Friday. Seeing 25 local businesses stay open late together was something special, but seeing the community response was even better.

We were so swept up in the energy that we honestly forgot to take many snaps! We missed the big street shots, but we did catch a few moments of the stars of the night: the determined scavenger hunters.

The street was full of scavenger hunters skipping between shops, travelers who made the trip up from Sydney, and locals connecting in ways that made the sense of community feel palpable.

We gave away over a hundred brownies to successful hunters, and while the goal was to find five ducks, quite a few of you were so on a roll that you kept going until you’d visited every single shop on the trail.

Help us fill in the gaps! Since we were busy hosting, we missed a lot of the action. If you took any photos or videos of the night - please send them our way or tag us. We’d love to see the night through your eyes. 📸🦆

We’re dusting the windows and putting the finishing touches on our displays today. There is a lot of activity happening up and down the street as we all get ready for tomorrow.

20+ independent shops on Katoomba St are staying open late until 8pm. It’s a rare chance to see the town after dark, explore the street at a slower pace, and see what everyone has been working on.

THE FACES OF KATOOMBA: Katherine from Gallery NWC

Katherine spent five years working in this very building, falling in love with the space long before the opportunity came to take it over. Two years ago, she turned those wacky ideas she’d dreamed up during her shifts into reality, officially launching Gallery NWC.

An artist by trade, Katherine’s path has always been about balancing her own creative practice with a drive to curate and champion fellow artists. While majoring in Printmaking at COFA, she intentionally selected every unit - from cultural leadership to writing for publication - with curation in mind. This dual perspective led her to launch during the pandemic, finding new ways for artists to show their work in workspaces when traditional exhibitions felt out of reach.

Why Katoomba?
Now a local of 10 years, Katherine moved here to raise her family and finds her energy in the outdoors. For her, the beauty of Katoomba is in the craftsmanship of the town itself. She encourages everyone to “look up” and notice the brass edgings, stained glass, and the character of the buildings that make our street so special.

The Paragon Cabinet
In a beautiful nod to our local history, Katherine’s reception counter incorporates an original Paragon cabinet, gifted to her by the building’s previous owners. She has filled it with Zokoko chocolate for sale, restoring the cabinet to its exact original purpose from the iconic Paragon Cafe decades ago. It’s a small, sweet piece of heritage preserved right in the heart of the gallery.

What’s ahead
Katherine is hoping to turn the gallery’s lower ground into a dedicated workshop and event space for local tutors and artists. She’s also planning to introduce antiques as sculpture props and curated pieces for sale - another intentional nod to the history of the area she loves.

THE FACES OF KATOOMBA: Kylie & Clare from Minerva’s Bower

Kylie and Clare met 15 years ago at their kids’ swimming classes. Kylie was wearing a top she’d made herself when Clare leaned in “Is that the... pattern?” They bonded instantly over a shared obsession with fabrics, and that was the start of it. After two years at local markets and a six year chapter in a Katoomba arcade - including a wild period of sewing thousands of custom masks during COVID - they moved into their bright, main-street home last September.

The Connection
Finding they were constantly traveling to Sydney to source the high-quality natural fabrics they couldn’t find locally, they figured other makers might be having the same trouble. They decided to create the shop they wished already existed - a space dedicated specifically to garment making.

The Practice
Both women come from generations of tailors and seamstresses; in their window, you’ll find Clare’s grandfather’s 1930s shears on display. They are known for being incredibly knowledgeable and generous with their time - they live and breathe their craft, making almost everything they wear. Their focus is strictly on sustainable, biodegradable textiles and natural fibres suited for the dramatic mountain climate. You’ll almost always find them in the shop together, usually having a great time.

Why Katoomba?
“We love the edginess and the diversity,” they say. For them, the mountains offer a similar vibe to the Inner West where they both grew up, but with a slower pace and a deeper, more intentional connection to the landscape.

What’s Ahead
The duo is preparing for their 4th annual event in June - a global tradition where makers wear their own creations. This year’s event also features the launch of a new Sustainable Textiles film by .

THE FACES OF KATOOMBA: Sal from SalOn

Sal’s journey with vintage started long before she opened a shop. She’s been thrifting and wearing vintage since she was 14 - a lifelong passion that eventually led her to study fashion before moving to the mountains 32 years ago. Her first “shop” was a spare room in her Leura house, opened on Friday nights for friends to browse over drinks. It was the start of a three-decade career in fashion retail.

From her first “proper” vintage shop on Waratah St to a boutique in Leura, Sal has evolved alongside the local creative scene. After a period of burnout and personal transition, she found her rhythm while subleasing in Madame Lash for 4.5 years. It was here she refined her focus on curated vintage and high-quality preloved womenswear and launched her signature styling sessions.

The Transition
After leaving the lash space, Sal volunteered to coordinate the first-ever Fashion Show - a sold-out success. Following this, she found her current home in Town Centre Arcade. The space features a north-facing window where she builds the elaborate, creative displays she loves.

The Practice
As a “Sustainable Stylist,” Sal works with women’s changing bodies and colour theory to help people find their confidence. She sources from all over, hitting the road on extensive buying trips to find the perfect pieces. She knows her customers so well that she’ll often find a specific item and think, “Nic would love this.”

Why Katoomba?
Sal is fiercely loyal to Katoomba’s “edgy and grungy” energy and its diverse community. “I have no interest in moving anywhere else,” she says. There’s a specific magic for her in the drive home from a buying trip, seeing the mountains and thinking, “Yay, this is where I live.”

What’s Ahead
While she’ll always be a “bricks and mortar” girl at heart, Sal is finally launching an online shop to reach those further afield. She is also prepping for the next Sustainability Fashion Show in Sept.

THE FACES OF KATOOMBA: Maggie from The Artists’ Store

Before moving to the mountains, Maggie spent a month as an artist-in-residence at Landslide Gallery (now .gallery ) in Wentworth Falls. Her mum already lived here, but seeing the area through a creative lens reframed how she saw the town. It wasn’t just the landscape; it was the community of creatives.

After years in Berlin and Sydney as an accessories designer for brands like Karen Walker, Maggie found herself at a crossroads during COVID. Though she studied fashion and textiles at UTS, she hadn’t painted in years. When her design job went part-time, she started painting again - and never went back. “Everything that felt unsettled or ill-fitting just fell into place,” she says.

The Pivot
Maggie & her partner, Cameron, originally pictured opening a wine shop in Sydney. But during her residency, Maggie noticed the art store in Katoomba was for sale. She called Cameron immediately: “What if we sold the house, moved to the mountains, and bought a business - just not the one we thought?” He agreed, and they made the move.

Learning & Practice
Maggie saw the store as an opportunity for an intensive technical education. “I love to learn through doing,” she says. Buying the shop allowed her to immerse herself in the trade while building her own painting practice. She is at her happiest when painting; it’s where she feels her most authentic - simply creating without trying to be any particular way. While the shop is a busy hub, she maintains a studio upstairs to focus on her own painting.

Why Katoomba?
Maggie is drawn to the energy of cold climate creative cities. “There’s often a rich interior aspect to life there which is reflective and intentional,” she says. “That over time becomes part of the fabric of a community I would like to be a part of - full of meaningful connection and creative output.”

What’s Ahead
Maggie is launching a new website next week for local click-to-collect and shipping. Beyond retail, she’s planning a hallway gallery, a pop-up bar, and hosting workshops.

How to Hunt: Your Official Guide to the Katoomba Duck Hunt! 🦆

The Duck Hunt is our official community scavenger hunt for Late Night Shopping on Friday 10th April. It’s a chance to explore Katoomba Street after dark, visit your local shops, and unlock a little reward along the way.

Here is your simple three-step guide:

1. Collect a Passport - Start your night at any participating local shop and pick up an official “Duck Hunt Passport.”

2. Find 5 Rubber Ducks - Explore the shops on Katoomba Street (they’re open until 8pm!). When you find a rubber duck tucked away inside a shop window, get the shopkeeper to stamp your passport. You’ll need to find five ducks to complete the hunt.

3. Claim the Prize - Once you’ve collected your five stamps, it’s time to redeem your prize. We’re keeping the exact details of the reward under wraps for just a little longer - but trust us, it’ll be a sweet way to end your night.

No purchase is necessary to join the hunt - it’s just about celebrating our local shops and enjoying a late-night stroll through town. Get your crew together!

THE FACES OF KATOOMBA: Lynne from Omnia

If you’ve spent any time on Katoomba Street over the last 18 years, you’ll know Omnia. It’s a shop that celebrates the unique over the mass-produced, filled with clothing & gifts from artisans both local and “from far and wide.”

Lynne’s career in design began long before her 18 years on the street. In the 80s, she was a milliner for Paddington shops and spent nearly a decade as a kidswear designer and pattern maker. After years in the wholesale trade, she became frustrated by a market flooded with cheap imports. Choosing not to compete with mass production, she instead doubled down on her philosophy of small-batch craftsmanship - opening Omnia as a space where the hand-made + artisanal come first.

The Making
Lynne describes this chapter as a creative retirement. “I make what I feel like making,” she says. “I have fun with it.” Whether it’s a dress, a hat, or moths made from vintage linen doilies, every piece she makes is a one-off. You’ll often find her walking around the shop knitting.

The Style
While she describes the overall store as “cute creepy,” her personal design style for adults is “Victorian Origami.” Inspired by the way Japanese & Chinese designers step outside the box with shapes and asymmetry, she describes her look as “stepping out of the film Oliver but with angles.” While she typically wears neutrals herself, she uses her kidswear range to explore brighter colours and patterns.

Why Katoomba?
A resident since 1994, Lynne loves the town for its grit as much as its beauty. She describes the street as having a “Darlinghurst in the 70s” energy - grungy, alive, and unpolished. “I would hate for it to lose its grunge,” she says. But beyond the street, it’s the landscape that keeps her here: “You walk down the road and you know why you’re there - the space, the air, the trees.”

Lynne is preparing an elaborate window for our Late Night event on 10th Apr, where you’ll find one of our ducks hiding for the scavenger hunt. Expect her signature “cute creepy” aesthetic with a touch of Vivienne Westwood.

THE FACES OF KATOOMBA: Kitty from The Postmistress Vintage

If you’ve stepped into the historic old Post Office on Katoomba Street lately, you’ve likely felt the energy of the place. That’s thanks to Kitty - the heart and soul behind The Postmistress Vintage.

Kitty has been selling vintage since 1984, but this April marks exactly one year since she opened this space in the heart of town.

The Collective:
The shop runs across two floors and is home to a group of local vendors. Because every vendor is from the Blue Mountains, the stock is updated constantly - often several times a week. It’s a rare setup for an antique centre - the vendors are often in the space working together and even volunteering their time for “working bees” to keep the shop looking its best.

The Style:
Kitty has been wearing vintage for 52 years, with a soft spot for the 1920s and 30s - think Art Deco tailoring and Hollywood glam. She describes the shop as elegant, quirky, playful, but above all, inclusive. “Everyone is welcome here. It’s about a safe, nice time and a community feel.”

Why Katoomba?
For Kitty, a Kamilaroi woman, being here is about more than just business. “The Mountains are sacred,” she says. She speaks of treading tenderly on Country and feels a deep historical and cultural connection to the area. Looking ahead, she’s excited about the future of the Postmistress Vintage - including dreams of a tea room out the back.

We’ve started this page to bring it all together - from the clothing and gift stores to our galleries, antique shops, bookstores, and florists. It’s for the adventure gear, the community co-op, our local op shops, and the cafes and bars that keep us fueled.

We’re a diverse mix of local businesses and community organizations that love being part of Katoomba.

Starting next month, we’ll be holding quarterly late-night events as the day winds down. Our first one:
