Leave the washing machine lid or door open after every load of wash to allow moisture to escape. Wait a few hours before closing it again. Dry just-washed clothes promptly. Even 4-5 hours is too long to let wet clothes sit in a warm, enclosed space.

How can I make my washing machine/dishwasher last longer?

Descaling your machine regularly will help to stop limescale building up. Running a normal wash cycle without any laundry in the drum using a commercial descaling product is the way to go if effectiveness is your priority. They're specifically designed to remove mineral deposits.

Alternatively use distilled white vinegar or lemon juice as a descaling solution.

Is your washing machine over-producing suds? If you are staring down a wash cycle that is looking like a bubble bath on the inside, try and complete the wash by running the clothes again on a rinse cycle to get the excess soap off, and if you have vinegar on hand, adding in a half cup white vinegar to the washer or in the detergent dispenser can calm the bubbles down.
