It was fantastic to see such a great group of participants who were engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and demonstrated a genuine commitment to safe and responsible fi****ms ownership.

🚨 Important changes are coming for Queensland fi****ms licence holders. Are you ready?

From 12 March 2027, Queensland’s fi****ms storage laws are changing.

If you currently store your fi****ms in a timber cupboard or cabinet, you’ll need to upgrade to a compliant solid steel safe before the new laws take effect.

The new legislation will affect Category A, B, C, E and M licence holders across Queensland.

Queensland fi****ms licensing changes are coming.

From 3 August 2026, new citizenship requirements under the Fighting Antisemitism and Keeping Guns out of the Hands of Terrorists and Criminals Amendment Act 2026 will affect some fi****ms licence holders in Queensland.

For most Australian citizens, nothing changes.

If you’re not an Australian citizen, it’s important to understand what these changes mean for your licence before it expires. If you hold a licence for sport or target shooting, make sure you’re a member of a recognised sporting/target shooting club. Those with a genuine occupational need (such as primary producers) also continue to have pathways under the legislation.

We’ve put together this simple infographic to help explain the key changes.

Can a minor obtain a fi****ms license in Queensland?

It’s one of the questions we’re asked most often—and the answer is yes, but the circumstances are often misunderstood.

There are two important distinctions:

✅ A minor can hold their own fi****ms licence, but only for genuine reasons such as:
• Sport/club shooting (membership required)
• Occupational purposes relating to primary production

✅ A minor aged 11 years or older may also be able to use a Category A or B firearm for training purposes without holding a licence, provided the requirements of the Weapons Act are met, including direct and immediate supervision by a parent, guardian, or person acting in that role, who is appropriately licensed, and only where it is otherwise lawful to shoot.

🚫 A minor’s fi****ms licence is not issued for recreational hunting or general recreational shooting and a minor can not legally own a firearm.

Understanding the difference between holding a licence and using a firearm under a legislative exemption helps clear up one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding junior shooters in Queensland.

Holding a Category H fi****ms licence in Queensland comes with ongoing participation requirements.

If you own one class of Category H pistol, you must compete in 6 handgun shooting competitions for that class on different days each financial year.

If you own 2 or more classes, you must participate in 4 club-organised shoots for each class each financial year.

Regular participation isn’t just about meeting legislative requirements—it’s also a great way to build confidence, maintain your skills, and support your local shooting club.

Safe shooting starts with regular practice. Stay safe, stay active and enjoy your time on the range. 👌
