Kinglake is sometimes referred to as the "Misty Mountain". At 550 metres elevation ( tiny by world standards but a mountain to us!), we receive about 50% more rain than Melbourne and the temperature is often about 4c less year round. Great for perennials, but the winters can be long, muddy and arduous for our staff. Lucky they are locals and are hardy folk...

Melianthus 'Antonow's Blue' ....
A brilliant cultivar we imported about 10 years ago. The foliage is considerably bluer than the species and is a more compact grower. We cut it down to knee high every year in winter and it reshoots very quickly. It is almost impossible to do from cuttings but it does set good seed which generally comes true to type.
However we sell it as just straight Melianthus major as we won't sell it as a cultivar if grown from seed due to genetic variability.

We are not open today but Kinglake distillery is!
The tasting room is set amongst the gum trees and tree ferns of Kinglake and the whisky is just sensational. A must visit experience, and Kinglake Market is on too...

Our staff have been potting like crazy this last month. Now that sales are slowing due to the onset of winter, we have more time for propagating and potting. All our plants are hand potted ( no machines here!) and grown in full sun whenever possible and do not go into igloos or tunnel houses.

10 years ago I received some seed of Furcraea bedinghausii.
5 germinated and were planted in my garden. And finally a flower spike emerged about 6 months ago. A very chunky purple flushed spike has grown to 4 metres and then horizontal stems have grown to produce these beautiful scented soft lime yellow flowers for months. It has now set seed and I hope we will have some for sale in about a year or so.
It has been remarkably hardy here in Kinglake, thriving in frosts and dry conditions alike. And the foliage colour is amazing!

The late flowering Sanguisorba 'Antique White' in full flower. We have bred this variety and it is proving very reliable and very popular. It makes a great cut flower and is now being trialled in Europe for florists and nursery production.
