💦 Top 5 tips for safer water crossings

1️⃣ Slow and steady
Enter gently and maintain consistent momentum. Avoid sudden acceleration, heavy braking or excessive wheelspin.

2️⃣ Check the depth first
Assess the depth, current, surface, entry and exit from a safe position. Never walk into fast-flowing or unknown water.

3️⃣ Know your vehicle’s limits
Check the manufacturer’s maximum wading depth and never exceed it. A snorkel alone doesn’t make every vehicle component waterproof.

4️⃣ Select low range
Engage low range and choose the right gear before entering. Avoid changing gears halfway through the crossing.

5️⃣ Adjust your tyre pressure
Lower pressures can improve traction on soft or uneven approaches and exits. Use a pressure appropriate for your tyres, load and terrain, then reinflate before returning to sealed roads.

If you’re unsure, turn around—no crossing is worth risking your vehicle or your safety.

After extraordinary rain across the outback, floodwaters have transformed Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre, bringing water, colour and life to a landscape better known for its endless salt and red earth.

And the transformation isn’t limited to the lake. Some of Australia’s legendary 4WD routes, like the Birdsville, Oodnadatta and Strzelecki tracks, take travellers through this remarkable part of the country.

But out here, water sets the rules. Track conditions can change quickly, closures are common after rain, and the lake surface must be respected.
