I am often asked at events why I decided to go down the path of being more self-sufficient. The answer is really so that I have less reliance on a system that underdelivers.

Most of the so-called best produce organically grown is out of the reach for most people, particularly when you are raising a young family. So then you are forced to spend money on a lesser product. And when you find out that it loses a great deal of nutrition between the paddock to your plate, you are really not getting from the produce what you are meant to.

For an example, lettuce loses 85% of its nutritional payload within 18 hours of being picked. So this is a long way short of where we all really need to be.

So I decided wherever I lived, for as long as I live, I would grow as much as I possibly could. So we rented for a lot of our lives and some places we rented in were okay with us using some of their garden to grow food in amongst their own existing garden. Some, not so, so we used innovative ways of growing stuff on vertical space, in potting mix bags, you name it, wherever we could find some soil somewhere we grew something.

Then 16 years ago we shifted here to Werribee, 500 square metre block and when I took the house, the paths, the driveway and all the areas I can't grow food in, we're left with only 120 square metres. Yet we produce about 85% of our fruit and vegetable needs year-round.

The produce is now fresh and of course in the last five years it's now nutritionally dense given I now know how soil functions with microbes. I don't use any chemicals, I don't use any fertilisers, I don't spray anything, I mimic nature and I share what I've learnt with all of you. This mattered to me because of my family, it now matters to me because of your family, this info I share made a difference in our lives and I am sure it will in yours.

People need to know this stuff! Make sure you follow the page or website for the daily posts, they are seasonal, relevant, and based on experience, I walk the walk! Not talk the talk! like some out there.

For more information you can get it at my website, check out the events page or online store for a copy of many books to help you on your journey. Https://craigcastree.com.au

The TREE ONION. Strange name ?
Hardy perennial onion a little like a shallot. Instead of a flower the onion has little bulblets that bend the stalk and the bulblets take root and grow. Hence its other name the walking onion. You can eat or pickle the bulblets. The whole plant is edible. A single bulb will produce around 10 bulblets and the cycle begins again. Around 5 months to harvest
Plant now in full sun into well drained soil.

WE WANT YOU TO BE SUCCESSFUL πŸ’šπŸ’―πŸŒ±
A customer bought in a beautiful Phalenopsis orchid she had been gifted, and it had black rotten roots like the picture. The pot had been very very wet for too long while on the shop shelf ( not us ), and she had bought it into us to find out if it was able to be saved. We removed it from the clear plastic pot, cut off the dead roots, removed the old wet bark, replaced with some fresh sphagnum moss and repotted. The plant had some nice silvery green fleshy roots so it will be fine.
If you have a challenging plant or need care advise we are here to help. Its what we do πŸ’š
