White sage has a long history of ceremonial and spiritual use among some Indigenous peoples of North America, where smoke may be used as part of prayer, purification, blessing or other cultural practices. Those traditions are diverse, and the meaning, protocols and plants used can differ between Nations and communities.
For people outside those traditions, it’s worth approaching sage with respect rather than treating it as something that automatically “cleanses negative energy.” A simple personal ritual can still be meaningful for example, using scent and smoke as a cue to slow down, reflect, set an intention or mark a transition.
🌿 If you burn sage at home:
• Use a fire-safe bowl or dish
• Keep a window or door open for ventilation
• Never leave smouldering herbs unattended
• Fully extinguish them when finished
• Be mindful of where the sage has come from and choose responsibly sourced material where possible
At The ZenDen, I see ritual as something that can be simple and intentional: pause, breathe, reflect, and create a moment of stillness.
