๐ค A STATEMENT FROM THE ALTERNATIVE MARKET ๐ค
*Any bullying, insults, defamatory, non factual, rude and unnecessary comments will and have been deleted*
The Alternative Market Launceston was created to be an inclusive, welcoming and safe space for people who don't always feel they fit comfortably elsewhere - vendors and visitors alike.
Inclusivity doesn't mean everyone has to agree with everyone else.
It means people are treated with kindness and respect despite those differences.
At The Alt, we welcome artists, makers, collectors, readers, small businesses, neurodivergent people, LGBTQIA+ community members, alternative folk, families, curious newcomers and anyone else who walks through our doors with kindness.
Our approach to AI as well as other 'controversial' products has also always been transparent. Vendors who use AI-generated elements are required to disclose this, and we provide signage so customers can make their own informed purchasing decisions. Vendors who don't use AI are equally welcome to make that clear.
You don't have to like AI.
You don't have to buy AI-assisted products.
You don't even have to agree with our policy.
But insulting our vendors, questioning their intelligence or character, or attacking an entire community because they don't share your position isn't advocacy. It's judgement.
There is an uncomfortable irony in asking where you can go to feel welcomed, respected and free from judgement โ and then immediately judging and insulting the people who created exactly that kind of space.
The Alt isn't interested in purity tests.
We're interested in people.
We have worked incredibly hard to build a community where someone can walk through the doors exactly as they are and know they're welcome.
Our only real condition has always been remarkably simple:
Be kind. Respect others.
If The Alternative Market isn't for you, that's completely okay. There are many wonderful markets and communities across Tasmania, and everyone deserves to find the spaces where they feel at home.
But we will not tear down one group of people to make another feel welcome.
That wouldn't be inclusion.
Come one, come all โ but most importantly, come as you are. ๐โ ๏ธ๐ค๐ค๐ฎ๐ณ๏ธโ๐โจ๏ธ
