It’s one of the most special times of the year in Tasmania : Fagus season has officially begun. Each autumn, the state’s only native deciduous tree, Nothofagus gunnii, transforms our alpine landscapes into stunning shades of gold and amber.
What makes Fagus so unique? While most Australian trees remain evergreen, this rare endemic species sheds its leaves, creating a short but spectacular window to experience true autumn colour in the wild.

Once considered as the site of Tasmania’s third ski field, Mt Rufus still holds a quiet sense of adventure. In winter, cross-country skiers glide across its snowy slopes. In the warmer months, the well-maintained track leads hikers through alpine landscapes to sweeping views over Mt Hugel and the deep blue waters of Lake St Clair.
For those willing to venture further, Mt Rufus also opens the door to wilder off-track journeys, including a spectacular summit traverse around Shadow Lake and Forgotten Lake.
