It’s been a rough year and we’re probably all ready to spend some quality time off with our loved ones.

– 1st AIF Sail from Australia

On the 1st of November 1914, 38 ships carrying the Australians of the 1st AIF and New Zealanders of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force sailed from King George’s Sound, Albany, Western Australia for Egypt.

Originally bound for England to continue their training, they were diverted to Egypt in the event that the Turkish attacked the Suez Canal. It was these forces who would then be deployed in the invasion of Gallipoli at Anzac Cove on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

These brave men would see service at Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine, as well as all along the Western Front. Of the men who sailed in that first convoy, only one in three of those would return physically unscathed at the end of the First World War.

Lest we forget their courage and sacrifice.
