Ahhhh yes. The EFTPOS surcharge is gone.
EVERYBODY CELEBRATE. 🎉
Except the actual EFTPOS fees haven’t packed their little suitcase and fu**ed off to Bali. Small businesses still have to pay them.
They just have to find another way to cover them.
This is like the government announcing they’ve abolished mosquitoes but actually they’ve just told them they’re no longer allowed to buzz.
THE BASTARD IS STILL BITING YOU.
So instead of seeing:
Coffee $5
Card surcharge: 8 cents
We’ll eventually just see:
Coffee: $5.08
And apparently we’re meant to stand there like David Copperfield has just made a Boeing 747 disappear.
“WHERE DID THE SURCHARGE GO?!”
It’s in the fu***ng latte, Susan.
Then the business puts the price up and everyone loses their minds.
“SEVEN DOLLARS FOR A COFFEE?!”
Meanwhile old mate behind the counter is paying rent, electricity, wages, insurance, stock, EFTPOS fees and probably $84 a month for some bastard software that sends him an invoice for the privilege of receiving the invoice.
And this is what melts my brain.
We’re constantly hearing we need to stop spending because inflation is too high.
But everything costs more.
That’s like telling someone to lose weight while quietly replacing their salad with a family-size lasagne.
“Have you considered eating less?”
HAVE YOU CONSIDERED MAKING S**T CHEAPER?
I genuinely feel for small businesses here because they’re stuck in the middle like a kid whose divorced parents are arguing at Auskick.
Customer: “I’m not paying a surcharge!”
Government: “Correct!”
Bank/payment provider: “Cool. Anyway, here’s your fee.”
Small business: “…well I suppose the muffin is $7.40 now.”
And around we bloody go.
The surcharge hasn’t disappeared.
It’s just changed its name, grown a moustache and moved into the price of the banana bread.
Australia’s greatest magic trick.
Now you see the surcharge.
Now you don’t.
You’re still fu***ng paying it though. 😂
