Dryness vs. Dehydration; These terms are often confused, but understanding the difference is key to supporting your skin with intention.
Typical dry skin is from a lack of extracellular lipids in the epidermis (ceramides, free fatty acids and cholesterol). This can be due to a genetically thinner epidermis affecting the keratinocytes natural lipid release during cornification or a mutation of the filaggrin gene. This gene is responsible for producing protein that helps form the skins barrier.
Dehydration is a temporary condition. A state where the skin lacks water, not oil. It can affect any skin, including those prone to oiliness or congestion.
More than just a lack of hydration, dehydration often stems from the skin’s inability to retain water due to a permeable or compromised barrier. This leads to increased Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (T.E.W.L), where moisture escapes before it can benefit the skin.
