Today is International Literacy Day.

Since 1967, the annual celebrations of International Literacy Day (ILD) have taken place on 8 September around the world to remind policy-makers, practitioners, and the public of the critical importance of literacy for creating more literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable society.

With that theme in mind, we've selected a few reads for little ones to teens to recognise the day:

Create a Cranky Comic this school holidays!

Katherine Battersby will be visiting Maleny to host a fun workshop in store on Tuesday September 29.

Bring a quirky character to life through pictures and words with the help of the creator of 'Cranky Chicken.' Katherine will lead a fun workshop with lots of drawing and plenty of helpful guidance on crafting a mini-book that will surely be the spark to continue the story at home.

Sarah always wanted to write about her grandmother’s activism in the 1967 Referendum and lifelong friendship with Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker). Sarah has been writing throughout her public relations career, before commencing memoir and novel writing.

The 1967 Referendum was the most successful in Australia’s history. Sisters in Armsis a work of creative non-fiction about the friendship between Oodgeroo Noonuccal and Kathie Cochrane, and their part in this pivotal campaign.

Working side by side – while raising families, attending rallies and door knocking whole communities – Oodgeroo and Kathie confronted hidden alliances, clashing agendas and government surveillance. Spies in parked cars watched them day and night. Oodgeroo’s home was broken into. Kathie was branded a Communist, and her children were shunned.

Drawing on archival research, declassified ASIO files and family memories, Kathie Cochrane’s granddaughter, Sarah Cochrane Ridout, tells the story of two remarkable women whose friendship, shared struggle and refusal to yield helped build the momentum for one of the great turning points in Australian history: the landslide YES vote.

Join us for our next Red Room event with award-winning author Mirandi Riwoe, the author of Stone Sky Gold Mountain, which won the Queensland Literary Award – Fiction Book Award and the inaugural ARA Historical Novel Prize, and was shortlisted for the Stella Prize and longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award.
