Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize The Maleny Wood Expo is now recognised as one of the best wood shows in Australia and attracts up to 10,000 people to the Sunshine Coast region annually.

Hosted by Barung Landcare, the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize is a prestigious national woodworking competition that is sustainable by nature, and beautiful by design.

We invite you to join us for three days of wholesome family fun in beautiful Maleny, nestled in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland. The Maleny Wood Expo has everything timber, from native plants, mobile milling and slabs to furniture, art and sculpture, hand-crafted products by furniture-makers, toy-makers, musical instrument-makers and box-makers, whittlers and carvers, and demonstrations by chainsaw, woodworking tool and equipment experts. View the amazing range of lovingly crafted timber products, and meet the craftspeople who’ve created them, there’s something to suit every taste and budget. Join in the range of hands-on woodworking and environmental workshops perfect for the whole family, there's something for all generations, and the Junior Landcare Paddock where kids can get their hands dirty and take home their own masterpiece. In 2024 there will be an expanded focus on environmental education and sustainable living, enjoy a range of exhibits that can support you to lower your impact and help protect the local environment. The Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize

Part of the Maleny Wood Expo is the annual ‘Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize’ exhibition. Sponsored by Sunshine Coast Council, the 'Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize' is a prestigious woodworking competition, attracting contemporary designers and innovative craftspeople from around the country and overseas. It is Australia’s richest woodworking competition, with a first prize of $10,000, and collective sponsorship for other prize categories to the sum of $8,000. A note on sustainability

All wood artisans and exhibitors are required to work with sustainably harvested native timbers, weed species, or recycled timbers. This is a single-use plastic-free event and all food vendors and stallholders are required to adhere to our Sustainability Policy. We encourage sustainability across the whole Expo experience. Visitors to the Maleny Wood Expo can further help us become a waste-wise community by bringing your own reusable drinking bottle, cutlery, coffee cup and shopping bags for purchases made at the Expo. Free water refill stations are available at the Expo.

With such a successful 2026 Wootha Prize now behind us, it's time to get the creative juices flowing again as we ask artists to consider ‘Shaping Regeneration’ as the theme for 2027.

This video was shot in Mary Cairncross Park, a truly awe inspiring subtropical rainforest here on the Sunshine Coast. The forest is a small fragment of what once covered vast parts of the Hinterland. Sadly on the day of filming a massive White Booyong was being removed due to it having an aggressive fungal disease. Like many, it is a forest under pressure.

Barung’s restoration and regeneration work remains as important as ever as we endeavour to extend and connect forests and contribute to environmental change.

We imagine that the works in Shaping Regeneration will, perhaps in subtle ways, contribute to environmental change through reflection, insight and inspiration, encouraging visitors to consider their own relationship with the natural world.

Our theme for the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize 2027 is Shaping Regeneration.

The works for the Sunshine Coast Wootha prize 2027 exhibition would consider timber not as a finite resource, but as a living continuum. Wood is not static, it remembers, adapts, and begins again.

Building on this theme, Barung Landcare would like to encourage community dialogue and deepen public connection with its environmental restoration and regeneration work.

We encourage work that considers ‘w**d’ woods as a material source.

Shaping Regeneration invites makers to create work that actively restores ecological and material systems through sourcing, lifecycle, function, and narrative. Submissions should demonstrate how materials, processes, and design can contribute to regeneration, whether through the reuse of overlooked resources, practices that honour ecological systems, or objects designed for longevity and evolving purpose. Regeneration may also be expressed through quieter gestures: forms that suggest new growth, surfaces that reveal hidden histories, or works that invite reflection, delight, and a sense of reverie. Together, these works remind us that renewal is not only a technical challenge, but a creative act.

Henry Mcerlean — Re-Leaf Seat
The Re-Leaf Seat is crafted from salvaged Silver Ash Flindersia schottiana and Australian Rosewood Didymocheton frasieranus. I aimed to bring the natural world and forest into a functional piece, highlighting the organic lines and beauty in the timber. Showcasing how nature and craftsmanship can intersect in an elegant, practical way.

This is my most recent attempt to create this free flowing, curved form which I have developed from what was basically a scribbled line on paper. It is made from a lightweight piece of Huon Pine and I have left it unpolished to preserve its fragile and delicate appearance.
