Charlton Heston,
4 October 1923 - 5 April 2008

Academy Award-winning actor and NRA President Charleton Heston spoke the words loudly and defiantly in 2000 at the NRA annual meeting in Charlotte, N.C.: “From my cold dead hands!” On that day, he held a flintlock rifle aloft to emphasize his point. Three years later, weakened by the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and making a final appearance before the NRA at its annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., Heston repeated the phrase, this time holding this L.D. Nimschke-engraved Wi******er Model 1866 that has been displayed at the NRA’s National Fi****ms Museum.

Wayne LaPierre introduced Heston at the 2003 convention and presented him with the Wi******er 1866, saying “Chuck, this is a very valuable rifle, but I think it’s about to become priceless, because I know you have something to say to us.” Holding the engraved gun, Heston repeated his famous phrase, “From my cold dead hands.”

The man who played Moses and Ben Hur and fought on the “Planet of the Apes” became NRA president in 1998, opposing any proposal that would restrict gun ownership, from waiting periods for purchases and mandatory trigger locks and the 1994 ban on assault weapons. During his tenure the organization boosted membership to 4 million and helped elect a supportive president in George W. Bush and a Republican Congress.

Today we stopped by the Ballarat Arms and Militaria Collectors Society (BAAMCS) fair at the Ballarat Showgrounds. Tonnes of tables of bayonets, uniform items, historical & antique small arms, ammunition, and impressive display pieces from reenactors & the VMVC.

The show is on again tomorrow, Sunday 13 July 2025 & is well worth the trip from Melbourne!

SHOT Show 2025 just keeps delivering & delivering, and everything old is new again. From classic Smith & Wesson Inc. “no lock” revolvers, to the G̶r̶e̶n̶d̶e̶l̶ ̶P̶1̶0̶ KelTec PR57, hungry niche gun buyers will be eating well this year. As will Rooftop Koreans, with US produced Daewoo K2s in the pipeline.

Sadly the K2s won’t be on the menu for Australian shooters, but I see a no lock Smith wheelgun in my future.

So preban Daewoo K2 fans, a U.S. produced version is happening.

This weekend we visited the Hamilton & Western Districts Gun Show, right in the heart of Victoria’s wool country 🐑

Plenty of dealers in attendance, along with displays from reenactors & the Victorian Military Vehicle Corps (VMVC). A great show that we’re looking forward to attending again next year!
