Ever watched a 3D printer working and thought...
"That looks pretty easy! Just download something, press a button and let the machine do the rest!"
Well... yes, there's a PRINT button.
But there's a whole lot more happening before and after you press it! ๐
Welcome to ๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ ๐ง๐๐ ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐๐ก๐ง, our new educational series from AAMAZ Creations!
Over the coming weeks, we're taking you behind the scenes of 3D printing, starting with the machines themselves.
We'll explore how they work, why different designs exist, what all those technical terms actually mean and what you should consider before buying your first printer.
And if you enjoy the journey, there's plenty more we could explore together!
With Christmas approaching, we know there are parents and families wondering whether a 3D printer might be the perfect present this year.
Maybe you're thinking about buying one for your child.
Maybe you've been considering one for yourself.
Or perhaps you've visited our market stall, seen an articulated animal or personalised gift and wondered...
Well, you're in the right place!
We want this series to be useful whether you've never touched a 3D printer, already own one or simply enjoy learning how things are made.
And where better to start than with the printer itself?

Most of us are familiar with ordinary printers.
You create a document or photograph, press print and the machine puts ink or toner onto paper.
A 3D printer is a little different.
Instead of producing a flat image, it creates a physical, three-dimensional object from a digital design.
Most 3D printing technologies use a process called:
Sounds complicated, doesn't it?
But the idea is actually quite simple.
๐๐๐๐๐ง๐๐ฉ๐ means we're adding material to create something.
Imagine building a wall one row of bricks at a time.
Or stacking hundreds of incredibly thin sheets on top of each other until they form a particular shape.
That's roughly how many 3D printing processes work.
The printer follows a digital design and gradually builds an object, one layer at a time.
Depending on the technology, those layers might be created using melted plastic, liquid resin or even powdered materials.
And here's where things get interesting.

When shopping for a home 3D printer, you'll commonly come across two types.
Filament printers.
Resin printers.
They both create physical objects from digital designs, but the way they do it is quite different.
Let's have a quick look.
You might also hear the term FFF, which stands for
For our purposes, both terms describe the familiar process of printing with a continuous strand of plastic filament.
Imagine a giant spool of plastic string.
That string is called filament.
The printer feeds it into a heated component called the hotend.
The plastic softens and melts before being pushed through a small opening called a nozzle.
The nozzle deposits the plastic along a programmed path.
The material cools and solidifies, and another layer is added.
Then another.
And another.
Until eventually...
You have a finished object!
It might be a keyring, toy, decoration, organiser, sign or functional component.
A wide range of colours and materials.
โ
Suitable for many decorative and practical objects.
โ
Machines available across a broad range of budgets.
โ
Generally more straightforward material handling than liquid resin.
โ
Plenty of opportunities to learn, experiment and create.
Layer lines can sometimes be visible.
Certain shapes need temporary support structures.
Different plastics require different printing conditions.
And a complicated model can take many hours to finish.
That's right.
Sometimes a little plastic toy can take longer to make than your Christmas roast!
Resin printing takes a different approach.
Instead of feeding plastic filament through a heated nozzle, many desktop resin printers use light to harden selected areas of liquid photopolymer resin.
One common technology is called MSLA
In simple terms, a light source shines through a screen that controls which areas of resin are cured.
The printer gradually builds the object layer by layer.
Because resin printers can produce extremely fine details.
They're particularly popular for:
Detailed figurines.
Tabletop gaming miniatures.
Small intricate models.
Decorative pieces with tiny features.
But resin printing also comes with additional responsibilities.
Uncured resin needs careful handling.
Prints usually need washing and additional curing.
Appropriate protective equipment, ventilation and safe waste handling are important.
And the chemicals involved shouldn't be treated casually.
Neither is automatically better.
They're different tools suited to different jobs.
For many beginners, particularly families, a suitable filament printer is generally the more straightforward place to start.
But we'll explore both technologies properly later in this chapter.
For now, remember:

Have you noticed that some printers have a bed that moves backwards and forwards?
Others seem to have a printhead flying around inside a box.
And some have three tall towers with a printhead suspended between them!
They're all trying to achieve the same basic goal.
But they don't all achieve it in the same way.
Let's introduce a few terms you'll hear throughout this series.
On a typical bed-slinger printer, the build plate moves forwards and backwards.
The printhead moves left and right, and the machine adjusts the printing height as the object grows.
These designs are common among hobby and entry-level printers.
They can produce excellent results and are often relatively straightforward mechanically.
But moving the bed also means moving the printed object.
CoreXY printers use a coordinated belt-and-motor arrangement to move the printhead horizontally.
In many CoreXY machines, the build plate moves vertically rather than travelling backwards and forwards.
This arrangement can help support high acceleration and fast printing.
But CoreXY doesn't automatically mean better print quality.
The overall design, calibration, materials and settings still matter.
Delta printers often have three vertical towers.
A series of coordinated arms positions the printhead.
They can look quite different from the printers most beginners recognise!
And that's only a brief introduction.
There are other designs too.
This is probably one of the first questions people ask when considering a printer.
And the answer is...
You can buy relatively affordable entry-level printers.
You can also spend thousands of dollars on machines with advanced features.
But spending more doesn't automatically mean you'll get a better printer for your particular needs.
Before looking at prices, there are a few questions worth asking yourself.
Are you interested in:
Toys and articulated animals?
Christmas decorations?
Replacement parts and workshop accessories?
Home organisers?
Detailed figurines?
Personalised gifts?
Different projects may require different printer capabilities.
A printer that's perfect for small keyrings might not be suitable for a large helmet or cosplay piece.
Every printer has something called a build volume.
That's the available three-dimensional space in which an object can be printed.
A smaller machine might be perfect for small toys and decorations.
A larger machine may be useful for big objects.
But bigger isn't automatically better.
Larger printers can take up more space and may cost more to purchase.
And some large objects can be printed in sections and assembled afterwards.
Now we're getting into some exciting territory!
Some printers work with one filament at a time.
Others can automatically change between different filaments.
Some even use multiple printheads.
Multicolour printing can produce fantastic results.
But it may also increase the cost of the equipment, printing time, complexity and material waste.
And here's a little preview of something we'll discuss later...
Some change filament through a shared nozzle.
Others change between separate toolheads.
And yes, some systems produce quite a bit of what we affectionately call...
Don't worry.
We'll explain that one properly in Part 6!
Not all filament is the same.
You might see names such as:
PLA โ Polylactic Acid.
PETG โ Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol-modified.
TPU โ Thermoplastic Polyurethane.
ABS โ Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene.
ASA โ Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate.
And that's only the beginning!
Different materials have different strengths, flexibility, heat resistance and printing requirements.
Some are easier for beginners.
Others need particular printer features or more carefully controlled environments.
You don't need to understand all of these materials today.
But it's worth knowing that not every printer is suitable for every filament.
This is a question that doesn't get asked often enough.
Some people love building, adjusting, upgrading and experimenting with machines.
They enjoy understanding every component and solving problems.
Others just want to load filament, choose a model and start printing with as little fuss as possible.
Neither approach is wrong.
But buying a machine that doesn't suit your personality can turn an exciting new hobby into a frustrating experience.
This is particularly relevant at this time of year.
A 3D printer can be an amazing gift.
It can encourage creativity, problem-solving, design skills and an interest in technology.
Instead of simply buying an object, someone can learn how to create their own.
That's pretty special.
But there's something important to remember.
It isn't simply a toy.
Filament printers contain hot components, moving mechanisms and electrical equipment.
They can also release airborne particles and gases during printing, so a suitable location and appropriate ventilation are important.
And the printer will occasionally need cleaning, maintenance or troubleshooting.
Is the child ready to learn how to use the equipment safely?
Will an adult be involved in setup, operation and maintenance?
Would a printer with automatic setup features be a better starting point?
Where will the printer live?
It needs a stable, suitable location with appropriate ventilation, access and clearance.
A child's bedroom shouldn't automatically be considered the best place for it.
For many beginners, PLA is a practical starting material.
But appropriate ventilation and safe operation still matter.
Will the person using the printer enjoy learning how things work?
Because not every print will succeed.
And that's normal.
Because there's a fair chance Mum or Dad will end up learning just as much about 3D printing!
And that's not necessarily a bad thing.
It can become a fantastic hobby to enjoy together.
Let's imagine you've found the perfect printer.
Great!
But before buying it, remember that the printer itself isn't the only expense.
Depending on the model and what's included in the package, you may also need:
Filament or resin.
Replacement nozzles and maintenance parts.
Cleaning supplies and suitable tools.
Material storage.
Suitable ventilation and safety equipment.
Software or design subscriptions, if you choose paid services.
โก Electricity.
And perhaps the biggest investment of all...
Because there's a learning curve.
You'll spend time understanding the software, experimenting with settings, cleaning the printer and occasionally figuring out why something didn't work.
But that's also part of what makes 3D printing interesting.
Now for a little story from the AAMAZ Creations workshop.
Because if there's one thing we've learned, it's that 3D printing can be unpredictable.
We had a print running for more than 15 hours.
Everything was going beautifully.
The printer was almost finished.
In fact, there were only about 50 lines of printing left.
And then...
Yep.
An actual fly.
After more than 15 hours of printing, one little visitor with absolutely terrible timing managed to ruin the print.
You can imagine how impressed we were! ๐
And that's something you don't always see when looking at a finished 3D-printed product.
Sometimes a print fails because of the settings.
Sometimes it's a problem with the filament.
Sometimes it's a mechanical issue.
And sometimes...
Welcome to the unpredictable world of 3D printing.
At AAMAZ Creations, we use several different printers because not every job has the same requirements.
Our workshop includes:
These are bed-slinger machines.
We also have two CFS units โ Creality Filament Systems โ which allow compatible automatic filament changing.
Each CFS holds four filament spools.
We can operate one CFS with each printer, or configure both CFS units with one compatible Hi using the required additional equipment.
We'll explore how these systems work in a later episode.
This is a CoreXY printer with a larger build volume than our Creality Hi machines.
It provides another option when we're deciding which printer suits a particular job.
Our Snapmaker U1 is another CoreXY printer.
But this one has four separate toolheads.
That means it approaches multicolour printing differently from a single-nozzle printer using an automatic filament-changing system.
And yes, we'll be talking about that in much more detail!
We also own two resin printers.
However, they aren't currently operating.
We're waiting until we have a suitably ventilated workspace and the correct arrangements in place to use them safely.
Because having the equipment doesn't mean you should rush into using it before you're properly set up.
Because different jobs have different requirements.
Some need a larger build area.
Some benefit from multicolour printing.
Others only need one colour.
And sometimes the best printer for the job is simply the one that's available, suitable for the material and capable of producing the required result.
Even with multiple machines, there's still planning involved.
We need to consider:
Product size.
Material.
Colours.
Estimated printing time.
Printer availability.
Maintenance and preparation.
And remember...

We've covered quite a bit!
But if you remember just a few things from today's article, let them be these.
3D printing creates physical objects from digital designs.
Filament and resin printers use different processes.
Not all printers move the same way.
Multicolour printing is exciting, but different systems work differently.
The most expensive printer isn't necessarily the best printer for you.
A 3D printer can be a fantastic Christmas gift, provided the person using it has appropriate support, supervision and a suitable workspace.
Learning and troubleshooting are part of the hobby.
And perhaps most importantly...

Next week, we'll take a closer look at how 3D printers actually move.
Why does one printer move the entire build plate backwards and forwards?
Why does another move the printhead around on belts?
Does CoreXY automatically mean faster or better?
And what does any of this mean if you're buying your very first printer?
We'll explain it all without requiring an engineering degree! ๐
