Splash is one of the most underestimated risks in healthcare handwash design.

When water impacts the basin surface, it can carry contaminants beyond the immediate wash area — increasing the risk of surface contamination.

The Australasian Health Facility Guidelines outline key considerations for handwash basins to support infection prevention, including:
• Basin geometry— curved designs help minimise splash and channel water efficiently to the waste, avoiding pooling
• Water flow type— laminar flow delivers a smooth, non-aerated stream that reduces turbulence, helping to minimise splash and aerosolisation
• Offset spout and waste — prevents water from flowing directly into the drain, helping reduce the risk of aerosolisation
• Base-located drainage

GENTEC healthcare basins are designed in line with these AHFG recommendations to help minimise splash and support safer healthcare environments.

Every touchpoint matters in healthcare environments.

In handwash areas, tap operation can influence the risk of cross-contamination.
• ✋ Manual taps require contact before and after handwashing, increasing touchpoints
• ✨ Touch-free taps reduce unnecessary contact, supporting improved hygiene practices

In high-risk clinical areas, reducing contact points can play an important role in supporting infection prevention strategies.

GENTEC electronic touch-free tap solutions are designed to support safer operation where hygiene matters most.

Hand hygiene is one of the simplest actions in healthcare — yet one of the most critical.

This World Hand Hygiene Day 2026, the theme “Action Saves Lives” highlights the importance of turning good practice into consistent action.

Effective action is essential — and the environment in which it takes place plays an important role in supporting it.

The design of the handwash area — from basin geometry to water delivery — can influence how, when, and how consistently hand hygiene is performed.

At GENTEC, we design our healthcare solutions to support these everyday actions, helping create environments where safe hand hygiene is easier to achieve.

✅ Electronic Sensor Tap– Touch-free operation with sensor technology, preventing cross-contamination while ensuring optimal water efficiency. The in-built hygiene flush minimises Legionella risks, while hygienic laminar flow prevents airborne bacteria from mixing with the water.

✅ STERISAN® Basin with Rear Offset Waste– Designed with rear offset waste to prevent aerosols created from water being directed into the waste fitting, thus reducing airborne bacteria. The curved basin geometry helps minimise splash and channel water efficiently to the waste to avoid pooling.

✅ One-Way Valve– Provides a protective seal between the basin waste and bowl, stopping bacteria and biofilm aerosols from entering the handwash area.

Supporting safer actions through smarter design — because action saves lives.

Hand hygiene saves lives.

The effectiveness of hand hygiene practices is also influenced by the design of the handwash basin and tap within healthcare environments.

The latest revision of the Australasian Health Facility Guidelines outlines stricter requirements for handwash areas, including-
For basins:
• Splash minimisation — optimised geometry to channel the water to the waste to avoid pooling
• Drainage control — offset waste to reduce the risk of aerosolization of biofilm
• Basin shape & depth — designed to support proper hygiene and water flow
• Detachable shrouds — encloses the pipe fittings, ensures convenient access to the drainage system
• Drainage holes — located in the base of the handwash basin and not on the basin sides/walls.

For taps:
• Laminar flow — reduces splash and aerosolisation
• Reliable temperature control — maintains safe water for hand hygiene

GENTEC healthcare solutions are designed in line with these AHFG requirements, helping hospitals maintain safer and more effective hand hygiene practices.

Design details matter — especially in healthcare environments.
