Toolern Vale House (Couch House), designed by Paul Couch, 1970.

I had the pleasure of visiting this Victorian bushland property. Built as his family home, there’s a beautiful rawness to the design. The warmth of timber against concrete, transitional courtyards and large expanses of frameless windows create an openness to the surrounding eucalypts and connect the house to the landscape in a honest way.

I wasn’t able to take many photos, but it’s no surprise I was drawn to the architecture. I later discovered Couch worked alongside Robin Boyd for more than a decade.

Orica House (formerly ICI House), Melbourne, 1958. Designed by Bates, Smart & McCutcheon and located on the corner of Nicholson Street and Albert Street. One of my favourite lobbies in the city, a landmark of Australian modernism.

Inside the foyer sits Joie de Vivre by Inge King. A central figure in Australian modernist sculpture, King believed that public art should activate architecture and create an emotional connection to place.

Dining room inspo. Designed by French modernist Charlotte Perriand in the mid-20th century, this approach to cabinetry marked a shift where storage was conceived as architecture rather than furniture, using simple geometric forms, natural wood paired with contrasting laminate panels.

Available—Chrome-Plated Tubular Steel ‘Arcadia’ Dining Set Designed by Jerry Johnson C. 1970s.

I found this vintage set in Carlton, Victoria last year. It’s so cool, sling chairs and original upholstery—adore. This five piece chrome-plated tubular steel dining set is designed by Jerry Johnson in the 1970s for his Arcadia Line, made by the Landes Manufacturing company.

The set comprises the table and four laid back sling chairs with removable back and seat cushions in brown vintage velvet.

The table is a circular smoked glass top and chrome-plated base. The dining table is also from the Arcadia Line and is not often found with sets of the chairs.

Condition:
DM for more detailed photos. The chrome frames have a vintage patina consistent with age. Sling chair show some marks and wear from use but functionally and structurally still sound. The velvet has a few marks from use. The glass top has some light scratches and chrome base some vintage patina. Inspection welcome.

Cape Schanck House, designed by Paul Morgan, 2006.

Nestled among the windswept tea trees of the Mornington Peninsula, expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and stone pavers extend from inside to outside blurring the boundaries between the built and natural worlds—to observe birds, the changing light throughout the day and the calming presence of nature.

What initially captured my attention was the intriguing central bulb element. I learned from staying, it’s actually a multifunctional water tank that cools the air in summer, collects rainwater, and supports the structure of the roof as it curves upwards.

Despite its modern design, the use of timber paneling both internally and externally ties the house back to its natural surroundings. The wood’s organic textures and colours echo the environment giving it a sense of place—my favorite aspect of architecture.

The Paterson House in Canberra, designed by architect Enrico Taglietti in 1970, nestled in the bushland suburb of Aranda.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to visit this iconic example of mid-20th-century modernist residential architecture. Characterized by dramatic roof lines, deep eaves, and strong geometric forms, it’s truly impressive.
