The Allah-Las' 2012 debut is one of the most convincing sets of psychedelic pop to arrive this millennium. The enticing mix of West Coast surf rock, lo-fi garage grooves and Byrdsian jangle hits that sweet spot that many bands have tried, and failed, to nail. The bandmembers all worked together at the L.A. branch of the legendary Amoeba music store. It almost gives us counter monkeys a good name. - Joe

A brace of albums from the magnificent mind of Matt Johnson, head honcho of The The. From the bare bones confessionals of 'Soul Mining' through the seething and bruised 'Infected' and the heavy concept pieces of 'Mind Bomb' right up to 2024's fragile comeback album, 'Ensoulment', Matt has ploughed his own particular furrow. Dark, literate songwriting of the highest order. Get in! - Joe

A heady blast of dynamite surf punk to start the day from southern Cali progenitors Agent Orange. This no-nonsense eight track debut from 1981 perfectly welds Mike Palm's buzzing guitar to urgent punk tracks, power pop anthems and a killer cover of Dick Dale's 'Miserlou'. It also includes the amazing 1980 single, 'Bloodstains', which deftly sums up everything great about the band. Too much fun! - Joe

Record of the day: Kellers / Brotzmann - "Edelgard... Maar Helaas!", original pressing on FMP. 1981 release of bone-snapping free jazz from repeat offender, Peter Brotzmann, this time aided by Willi Kellers on drums. A real heavyweight skronk and clang fest, full of muscular, discordant sound that hits so hard it's difficult not to take it personally. For my money, Peter's sax is responsible for the most extreme music out there; it never blends into the background, always getting right in your face and daring you to get up and take the record off or leave the room, or do anything to make it stop. I find it cathartic to get through a side every now and then to realign my spine a bit and see if I still have what it takes to endure. Some customers came in halfway through this morning's session, though, and I thought it best to turn it off. Will have to try again later, maybe after closing time... - Jeff

Record of the day (and every day!): Dolly Parton - "Peace Train", 2x12", 1997. The legend of country music and all-round excellent person, Dolly Parton, took a sidestep in the late 90s that I, for one, didn't see coming, covering Cat Stevens' 1971 hit, ably assisted by South African vocal group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, presented in double 12" format with fixe club-friendly remixes from the likes of Junior Vasquez. Sure, it's on the commercial end of dance music, but the Vasquez mix in particular is a bit of a banger. And just look at that vampish photo of her on the back from David LaChappelle, all ready to hit the clubs! - Jeff

Record of the day: Maynard Ferguson - "MF Horn 3", US pressing from 1973. Cool album from Maynard, with the Canadian trumpeter blasting into his horn with his entire body and soul, backed by a swinging big band, and legend, Teo Macero, handling production. It's a fine set of jazz-funk grooves, and the track, "Pocahontas", was sampled by Naughty By Nature and Lord Finesse. But the reason it made it to Record Of The Day, though, is the unusual stamp on the rear of the sleeve: "For Governmental Sale Only". Never seen that before! I figured it meant for sale to libraries or something, but the internet seems to think it's almost certainly a record that was sold on US military bases. I wonder if they still sell records there? What would be the biggest seller on an army base in 2026? - Jeff

Record of the day: Invisible College - "The Luxury of Horns" reissue from 2026. Really digging this treat from the Melbourne electronic underground, originally released in a micro-quantity on cassette in 1982. The Invisible College is an alias for the Laughing Hands, an almost equally obscure outfit, and they manipulated tapes, synths, and drum machines, as well as more traditional instruments like guitar, bass and percussion, to create rhythmic, industrial-edged, minimal synth patterns that presage the likes of Aphex Twin and Boards Of Canada. Irresistible sounds that I, for one, can't stop listening to! - Jeff

Record of the day: Durutti Column - "Renascent", 2026. As you can see from the photo, we have a couple of Durutti Column albums in stock right now, but my focus today is the one on top: "Renascent". A new album from Vini Reilly wasn't on my bingo card for 2026; but here we arem and what an album it is. Plaintive guitar lines appear and drift away as leaves in the wind, leaving small reminders of their existence through flashes of colours reflected in dappled sunlight and the sweet fragrance of harmonics and overtones joining in their hazy dance. Sorry for getting all quasi-Proust-ian, but there's something about Vini's guitar work that brings it out of me. Stunningly beautiful and haunting, as usual! - Jeff

A songwriter that could only have appeared in the UK in the seventies, Kevin Coyne's majestically rambling sprawl of an album, 1973's 'Marjory Razorblade', was a career high. His peculiar brand of folk blues owed as much to proto punk as music hall, with his days as bus driver and social therapist providing a sure ear for quick, wryly barbed lyrics. Intense personal songcraft from a bygone era. - Joe

August is the month in Melbourne when Winter starts to outstay its welcome. So let Greg and Sokratis sweep you off to a land of blue skies and azure oceans on their 2026 collab, 'Impressions of Samos'. The UK pianist and Greek duduk maestro are joined by Giorgos Pappas and his trio, laying down a sun ripened bed of modal folk-jazz grooves peppered with flecks of synth and the sounds of island life- barking dogs and chirruping insects adding to the charm of this easy going set. Wonderful! - Joe
