I learnt VALUES

Values are your shadows, mid tones and highlights

I started doing quick studies, set a timer for 45 minutes and my goal was just to match the values of my reference

This has helped train my eye so much in the past 6 months, not only has my technical skill improved but so has the amount of time it takes me to complete a painting!

Don’t get it twisted, I make 10 bad paintings with purpose for every 1 finished piece

Here’s an exercise I’ve been doing recently to stack this skill building:
Choose ONE thing you want to practice like fur texture
Choose a reference that suits
Set a timer for 60 minutes
Focus ONLY on getting the values and your one practice focus as close as possible
Forget about everything else

Tip to keep this cheap:
Use cheap paints for your studies
Prime a sketchbook with gesso so you can use your oil paint in there to save canvases or canvas roll or your expensive oil paint pads

Now go paint!! 🤍
