Composite or timber decking?

If you want low maintenance, that is composite. It needs a clean and nothing more.

If you want real timber, it will need oiling from time to time. Many people choose it for that reason, because they prefer the way it weathers.

Neither is the wrong choice, whether you are building it or living on it. They ask different things of you.

Tossing up between engineered and solid timber flooring?

Both are real timber on top. The difference is underneath.

Solid is one piece, so the whole board moves when the house goes damp in winter and dry again in summer.
Engineered timber has a timber top on layers glued crosswise, the same trick as plywood, so each layer still holds the one above it.

Slab, ground floor, underfloor heating, wide boards: engineered.
More to sand back later: solid, and ask how thick the top layer is either way.

Solid is also finished on site after laying. Engineered arrives finished, which is one trade instead of two.

Steve and the team at are currently working on the landscape at his place in Ascot Vale.

They're residential builders, focusing on renos and extensions, and they take a job right through: cladding, the garage structure and the finishing touches, all of it designed and customised.

Silvertop Ash decking, timber batten screening around the zones, treated pine through the whole substructure.

Silvertop is one of the Australian ones, and it runs blonder than the imported timbers people usually line it up against. The screening is what makes a standard block feel like it has rooms in it.

Before Greenhill Timbers became what it is today, it was Kollee, his wife, a ute and a shipping container. 💚

Now it's flooring, decking, cladding and structural timber, all from one yard in Thomastown. Konrad runs the range and the yard. Matthew works with customers on what actually suits the job.

For builders that means one supplier instead of four. For anyone renovating it means the advice comes from the people who handle the stock every day. 🤝

Three structures in one backyard, and one timber running through all of them.

A period home in Flemington with a big yard to resolve. Pergola, screening, and the pool equipment timber box.

Australian Blackbutt timber; it runs blonde rather than red. A pale timber keeps a backyard feeling open, and next to a period home it sits with the house rather than competing with it. Running one species across all three is what makes this read as one space rather than three projects.

Konrad runs through what's actually on the table: engineered timber, premium laminate, and a floating install rather than a fixed one, which is the option most people don't know exists.

You don't often see blackbutt used right across a backyard like this.

The boys at have done a ripper job on this heritage home in Flemington. Blackbutt through the pergola, decking, the timber screens and the pool equipment timber box, alongside all the landscape and Plungie Australia Max pool.

Keeping one species across all three is what ties the yard back to the house. Blackbutt runs blonde, so it sits with a period home rather than fighting it.

Pulling stock, cutting to length, loading utes out the front, and a lot of standing over a plan with someone working out what they actually need. Konrad's in the yard. Matthew's with a customer.

Choosing what goes in the yard takes longer than you'd think, and that's on purpose. Nothing gets a spot until we know where it came from and who stands behind it.
