Warning: Long post ahead đ
Well, after a 4-5year break focusing on my kiddies and those closest to me, Iâve dived head first back into the competition scene with Meatstock Bendigo being our second comp for the year with some great friends supporting me along the way.
Meatstock Bendigo was Epic, heartwarming and a whole lotta fun. It started with a late bump-in the Friday night (Thanks heaps Russell, absolute legend) followed by a great day catching up with both old and new bbq mates along with helping our team mate Ryan where we could for his Steak Cookoff Association hand-ins. You should be proud of how far youâve come in such a short time mate.
Saturday night saw us trimming into the night and preparing for the big dance. Big thanks goes to Scotty for separating the two briskets for me to trim down later while I was working on other cuts, youâre a true gentleman.
Stupid me slept in an extra hour or so which had me chasing my tail for most the day with 3 or 4 of the hand-ins being sprinted to the table narrowly making the window each time, but hey, they made it đ
I wasnât happy with a few of the hand-ins on the day but I am my own worst critic which my team mates kept reminding me and the judges clearly felt I was wrong as well with some great results in the end placing us in 5th position overall for Meatstock Bendigo 24 đ Narrowly missing out on RGC by only 4-5pts. I honestly couldnât be happier with those result for our second showing and to see the smiles on my team mates beside me and those around me were absolutely priceless.
5th overall in a strong field
4th in Brisket - score:296
5th in Chicken - score:297
7th in Pork - score:293
10th in Ribs - score:288
18th in Lamb - score:280
Unfortunately lamb let us down coming in 18th, I should have made the call not to put in one of the cuts but hey, thatâs bbq sometimes and Iâll take the lessons it brings. Can only improve from there right.
Jay Beaumont you & your crew sure know how to put on an event mate, somehow it just gets better and better each year, and it did not disappoint, the new venue in Bendigo is legit amazing. Great site sizes for teams too mate đđ»
Huge thanks to my team mates Carly, Dean & Ryan, you guys have been wanting me to come back for quite sometime now and here we are, Iâm back doing something I love and happier than ever so thank you for all the subtle and not so subtle nudgesđ. Thank you for all you do and have done, we wouldnât be here without your support.
The warm welcome back by old nânew bbq family was appreciated more than you guys could know, so thank you to each and every one of you
MASSIVE congrats to my old comrades at Smokeface Grillahs and the team for winning Grand Champions at Meatstock Bendigo, it was an awesome moment for you lads and Iâm so fkn glad I could be there to witness it, I couldnât be happier for you fellas, anybody can win sober hey đ Was real nice to catchup with you and shoot the breeze over a few drinks as well. Looking forward to many drinks ahead đ»đ»đ»
And Big Congrats to Gamebred Barbecue for taking out RGC, was great seeing you walk & catching up again mate, I look forward to the next oneđ»
I want to give a big congrats to my team mate Ryan for digging deep when he thought he was done, he didnât want to cook the steak category with everything else he had going on, but with a little support from his team mates and a few nudges he ended up pulling out a 2nd place in steak by doing so, keep up the great work youâre doing mate, youâre going to go far in this scene and now youâll never say no to cooking a steak again đ
BIG thanks to our first sponsor onboard for the JG BBQ journey that lays ahead,
Char Char Char
Mate your knowledge and approach to the bbq scene here in Vic is commendable, and I always enjoy our many in-depth chats on all things life & bbq and Iâm absolutely stoked we can help support your business as you support us
Special thanks goes to The Que Club for helping us out last minute with some quality briskets that helped us achieve 4th place đ much appreciated guys
We ended up running with 3 x drums and a Green Mountain Grills on the day with the drums all using a Deflector plate and as always, fueled by Heat Beads BBQ Lump as well as their wood chunks, you just canât beat it for its consistency & sizing each and every time.
Roll on the next Comp!!!
