It is widely accepted in CHRISTIAN faiths that Jesus rose from the dead to save humanity. In the Ukraine, icons of Mary hold special national significance including this mosaic image of ‘Oranta’, located in St. Sophia Cathedral, Kyiv.
Orthodox icons of Mary with arms outstretched in prayer have historically represented freedom and long been revered in Ukrainian culture since the time of this cathedral’s foundation in the 11th century. Many believe that as long as this icon on the ‘Indestructible Wall’ survives, as it has for centuries through war and turmoil, then Kyiv and the Ukraine, will too survive.

💚 RELIGIOUS Art and today of all days I am drawn always to Michelangelo’s Pietà (art detail featured). Perhaps the image of a Mother cradling her deceased child is what connects me to this iconic Renaissance sculpture; I know the horrific pain of holding my own lifeless baby. Or perhaps it’s the loneliness of a mother’s grief which is also palpably sculpted. Motherhood is complex, at times solitary but can also be filled with an abundance of love, beauty and wonder.
Today I’m sending my love to our MADAME HUNTER Art Community friends in mourning; especially those grieving a beloved child 💚

STORIES of Melbourne and covid and humanity are evolving beautifully on the MADAME HUNTER Art Salon mural and one little Art Hunter is suitably thrilled to be featured.
Photographed by between lockdowns in 2021 while spraying together in Hosier Lane, this image represents the best and worst of the past 12 months. When our family spent this early Saturday morning painting, with and , the children’s mental health was fast declining. This moment of creativity and freedom was so sustaining and precious for us all.

POSTCARDS from Melbourne as our vibrant city peps up and starts humming again. This Madame has been regularly stuck in traffic over the past week and I have to admit … I like it.
She queued for ramen on Russell and then sat like a sardine at a comedy gig thereafter. Walking our hallowed streets with a bosom friend (the dearest kind) and Art spotting while Autumn falls … so grateful for these happy days. Pure joy 💚

GRATITUDE fills my heart this morning for 100 beautiful reasons. And they all involve Art 💚
Incredible exhibitions open and close every day of the week across our great country and you would be right in feeling that the business of Art could propel one to constantly focus on the ‘next’ show or the ‘latest’ artist; rather than deeply absorbing what is. To stay in the here and now.
This Madame has been so honoured to curate and exhibit ’s INSIGNIA series and although the exhibition will now be deconstructed, I can’t help but feel that the legacy of the show will never be finished.
This is just the beginning for INSIGNIA 💚
Half an hour before the start of the INSIGNIA exhibition opening, I received a phone call. The phone call summoned me to book a medical appointment. “Ah, so sorry.” I hurried. “This will have to wait 2 weeks, is it urgent? We’re about to open an exhibition”. So I found myself this week in a medical waiting room. The type of waiting room where every few minutes lives are changed and trauma is a given.

As I buried myself in luscious Art reading to pass the hours, my eyes and mind were drawn heavenward and to the two large, patchwork quilts hanging before me. My eyes followed its precision and symmetry, the identical shapes and swatches of colour. I looked for the maker’s stitches and questioned the placement of fabric. The quilts were flawless. With study across my lap and eyes darting across the walls I locked gaze with a pensive septuagenarian. (continues in comments) 💚

This MADAME turns 46 today 💃 I feel so grateful to have reached another birthday, to have woken up in my favourite city Melbourne without restrictions or war, and to have my health. One doesn’t have to look very hard week in 2022 for spoils or moments of gratitude.
As I sat outside the Salon door yesterday watching spray onto the MADAME HUNTER Art Salon mural, as I gazed back into the Salon staring at ＧＲＥＴＡＬＡＵＮＤＹ]’s INSIGNIA series, calm descended on me. It’s a great time in Australia for women in the Arts, there is not a moment to waste should one have something to say.
If not now to say it,
If not now to do it,
then when?
I was reminded of this during the week as I submitted my first historical analysis for my undergrad’. I wrote about a Renaissance maiolica plate, Jupiter and Semele, currently exhibited at from our permanent collection (view in my stories). The plate was sent as a gift to Isabella d’Este the greatest woman Renaissance patron, by her daughter, and represents how women participated in the Arts during Renaissance times. We’re still celebrating the decisions of these women hundreds of years later and it means something special for our times. I wonder what contemporary Art decisions will mean for future communities?

… on THIS day each year, I share the story of my Stella Rose. 16 years ago I delivered my first-born daughter Stella, stillborn. Nothing prepares a parent for the knowledge that their child has died in utero and nothing prepares a mother for the trauma of delivering a life-less baby. The grief changes the fabric of who you are and becomes its own life’s work.
16 years on, Stella’s loss still makes my heart ache but I have the conjured imagining of my little Art Hunters’ big sister too. I asked my littlest last night to head to the bath, to which she replied that it was “Stella’s birthday and l’ll go when Stella tells me to.” I reminded her that Stella was on “my side” to which she replied emphatically that Stella was her sister and that only meant one thing. They were a team, Stella was on her side and she would go to the bath when Stella said.
Strength rises from trauma in the most unsuspecting places. One can only hope for it … and when it comes, it’s felt with the deepest of humility and gratitude 💚
