Will it survive the childhood it was made for?

It’s one of the questions we think deserves more attention when choosing a toy.

Materials matter. How something is made matters.

But so does what happens six months later.

Can it survive being dropped?

Can it handle the sandpit, bath or backyard it was designed for?

Can it be cleaned properly?

Will the wheels still turn?

Could another child use it when the first has moved on?

Sometimes a beautifully made wooden toy answers those questions brilliantly.

Sometimes a tough, recyclable plastic toy designed for years of outdoor play makes more sense.

That’s why we’re cautious about reducing sustainable toy choices to “wood good, plastic bad.”

A toy that lasts, stays useful and can move from one child to another has something important going for it: it doesn’t need replacing so quickly.

For us, better buying is less about choosing the material with the nicest story.

It’s about choosing something genuinely worth keeping.

Sometimes the best playthings aren't toys at all.

Sticks. Leaves. Mud. Stones. A patch of grass. Somewhere to climb, collect, build and wonder.

A new Australian story this week looked at children spending regular school time learning and playing outdoors. What stayed with us wasn't the idea that parents need to create another elaborate activity.

It was almost the opposite.

Nature play works partly because children get room to decide what happens next.

A stick doesn't tell a child what it is.

Today it might be a wand. Tomorrow a bridge. Five minutes later, part of a cubby.

We spend a lot of time at Hello Charlie thinking about what makes a toy worth bringing into a home — materials, durability, function and how long it might actually be played with.

But conscious parenting isn't about finding a product for every moment.

Sometimes the simpler choice is to step outside and let the environment provide the play.

No shopping list required.

Firm. Gentle. Both.

This morning, I heard two words about parenting that stayed with me: firm and gentle.

Not firm instead of gentle.
Not gentle instead of firm.

Both.

Being firm doesn't have to mean being louder, stricter or winning the argument. Sometimes it simply means the boundary stays where it is.

And being gentle doesn't mean the boundary disappears because our child is upset.

A child can be disappointed. They can be angry. They can cry. We can acknowledge all of that without immediately changing the answer.

Perhaps that's one of the harder parts of parenting: holding two things at once.

“I understand this is hard.”

And:

“The boundary is still here.”

Parenting research uses different language — warmth, responsiveness, consistency and clear limits — but the idea is remarkably similar.

We won't get the balance right every time.

Maybe these are simply two useful words to keep coming back to:

Firm with the boundary.
Gentle with the child.

Apparently, one Oreo can start quite a conversation.

The lunchbox debate doing the rounds this week began with one child noticing that another child had Oreos — and asking why she didn't.

We don't think the useful question is whether every lunchbox should contain them.

Or whether none should.

For us, a good school lunchbox starts with the everyday things: food that gives children enough energy to learn and play, fruit and vegetables they'll actually eat, something substantial, water, and enough variety across the week.

And sometimes?

There might be a biscuit.

Or a little piece of cake.

That's okay too.

Healthy eating isn't determined by one food in one compartment. It's the pattern over time that matters.

We'd rather help children understand that different foods have different places in our lives than make one biscuit feel forbidden — or make another family feel judged for packing it.

Healthy most of the time.
A little joy sometimes.
No lunchbox judgement.

What matters most is that children are fed, supported and learning to enjoy food.

Have you ever finished your toddler's leftovers and thought… why does this taste like dish soap?

It is a surprisingly common complaint with silicone feeding ware.

That doesn't automatically mean the plate is unsafe — and it doesn't mean every silicone bowl needs to go in the bin.

Before replacing anything, try changing one variable:

• use a fragrance-free detergent
• rinse thoroughly
• let the silicone dry completely
• follow the manufacturer's care instructions
• check for tears, stickiness or deterioration

Then serve something neutral and taste it yourself.

If the problem disappears, you've probably saved yourself an unnecessary replacement.

If it keeps coming back, a stainless-steel eating surface may simply suit your family better.

The point isn't that silicone “lost”.

It's that feeding ware should make everyday meals easier.

Sensory play doesn't have to start in the toy cupboard.

A wooden spoon against a metal bowl.
A rosemary leaf rubbed between little fingers.
A cool pebble, a soft cloth, the sound of dry leaves under shoes.

Children learn a lot simply by noticing how the ordinary world feels, sounds, smells and moves.

ABC Kids recently made a point we really like: sensory exploration doesn't need complicated equipment or specially designed resources.

That doesn't mean sensory toys aren't useful. A well-chosen toy can introduce a texture, movement, sound or cause-and-effect experience that's difficult to recreate another way.

But before adding another one to the basket, we think it's worth asking:

What is my child actually curious about right now?
Pouring?
Tapping?
Scrunching?
Grasping?
Things that roll?
Start there.

Sometimes the best new activity is something that's already in the kitchen drawer.

“Organic cotton” and “GOTS certified” aren't quite the same thing.

That's one detail worth knowing when you're comparing baby wraps, bibs, clothing and soft toys.

In Australia, a product doesn't automatically need a particular certification simply to use an organic claim.

GOTS adds something different: an independent textile standard covering certified organic fibre requirements plus processing, chemical inputs, environmental criteria, worker-related criteria and traceability.

But we wouldn't buy something because of the logo alone.

We still look at:

What is the full material composition?
Is it well made?
Can we wash it easily?
Will we actually use it for long enough?

Certification gives you useful information.

It doesn't make the rest of the product irrelevant.

Book Week doesn't have to mean buying another costume.

With Children's Book Week starting this Saturday, plenty of Australian households are currently having the same conversation:

“What are you going as?”

Before heading straight to the shops, we like a slightly different starting point:

Which story does your child actually love?

Then look at what you already have.

An old striped top.
A favourite hat.
Dad's oversized shirt.
A toy already sitting in the dress-up box.
A cardboard box that can become almost anything.

Borrowing, swapping and reusing aren't the “less impressive” version of Book Week. Sometimes they're where the creativity actually starts.

And if you do buy something, there is nothing wrong with that either — we'd just ask whether it can become part of the dress-up box afterwards rather than something worn once.

The parade lasts a morning.

Hopefully the story sticks around much longer.

Starting solids can already feel like a lot.

Iron-rich foods. Texture. Cups. Mess. Choking advice. Allergens.

And one detail in Australia's updated 2026 infant-feeding guidance is easy to miss:
Introducing an allergen once isn't necessarily the end of the job.

ASCIA now specifically recommends introducing well-cooked egg and peanut soon after a baby starts solids, in an age-appropriate form. Once common allergy-causing foods have been introduced and tolerated, the advice is to keep including them at least weekly.

That doesn't mean turning feeding into a complicated spreadsheet.

Think more along the lines of making familiar foods part of normal family meals: smooth peanut paste mixed into porridge, cooked egg, yoghurt, tahini or other age-appropriate foods your baby has already tolerated.

The National Allergy Council has also just launched a free Food Follower tool to help families keep track — which tells you something about how normal it is to forget.

When should toothpaste actually start?

For most Australian babies, brushing begins before toothpaste does.

Once the first tooth appears, start cleaning it with a soft toothbrush. But Australian general guidance recommends water only until around 18 months, unless your dentist advises otherwise.

From 18 months to 5 years, the usual recommendation changes to a pea-sized amount of low-fluoride children's toothpaste twice a day.

That distinction gets lost surprisingly easily when the toothpaste shelf is full of “baby”, “toddler”, “natural” and “fluoride-free” labels.

We don't think parents need another argument about whether fluoride is “good” or “bad”.

A more useful way to choose is:

How old is my child? What fluoride concentration is in this tube? How much should I use? And has our dentist given us different advice?
