Book Week is almost upon us and while we love the parade, it is important to remember that Book Week is about so much more than costumes. Book Week activities don't have to be time consuming or expensive, it is most important to remember that it is a time to celebrate books and reading, particularly Australian books, authors and illustrators. Kids love graphic novels but I can't tell you how many times I've heard a parent or teacher tell a child to choose a "proper book". Reading graphic novels can be hugely beneficial for kids, for all kinds of reasons, and a great addition to a child's reading repertoire. So even though it may not look the same as reading a book full of words, reading a graphic novel is real reading!

As a bookseller, librarian and mum, I often come across kids with ADHD who struggle to read for pleasure (I also often come across ADHDers who LOVE reading).
