This cheeky one missed the previous post and probably one of our most important lessons!!!

See even 7 years on, we ain't perfect, we still stuff up and can always strive to do better!

Which is exactly what this slide was all about!

Product testing isn't something that is easy and cost effective to do in the sensory space, but it was always a must, and we knew the minute we could afford it we would do it. This is something we felt so passionate about! We knew our products we believed safe, I mean all our supplies told us so, but we wanted to know our kits were safe as a whole. The full kit not just the pieces individually!

We guess what, we had to change stuff, not everything passed even though we thought it did. So it taught us, just because you "think" it's safe, doesn't mean it is safe.

So to all those small business in the sense space out there.. keep making this a priority. Strive to find the money when you're in the right place to get your products tested. Do it for your customers, even if it costs you the amount of a well deserved holiday!

There’s a version of running a business you see from the outside, and then there’s the version that actually happens behind the scenes.
Seven years ago, we had an idea for a potion kit, launched a website and hoped someone other than our family might buy one.

We definitely weren’t thinking about trademarks, international toy safety standards, warehouse capacity, licensing agreements or what we’d do if nearly 1,000 orders landed in a single day. 😂

We were just trying to make something we thought kids would love.

Since then, we’ve moved warehouses, grown a team, been on Shark Tank, won awards, worked with brands we never imagined we’d work with and watched potion play become a whole category of its own.

But some of our biggest lessons haven’t come from those big moments.

They’ve come from getting things wrong, growing too quickly, saying yes when we probably should have said no, spending money on things customers may never see because we knew they mattered, and learning when to stick to what we believe in.

We understand our business much better now too.

The fizzing and mixing is ridiculously fun, but what has kept us excited about creating these kits for seven years is everything we can wrap around that play: imagination, stories, confidence, kindness, bravery, worries, gratitude, nostalgia and a little bit of childhood magic.

There are plenty of things we’d do differently if we were starting again.

But I’m also glad we didn’t know everything we know now, because I’m not entirely sure we would have been brave (or naive 😂) enough to start.

So these aren’t really business lessons.
They’re just seven things two sisters have learnt while figuring it out as we go.

And to everyone who has bought a potion, told a friend about us, shared a post or simply followed along.....

thank you for being part of it.

Seven years down.

And we’re nowhere near finished. ✨

WILL ANYONE ACTUALLY BUY IT!?😬

Is what we were thinking on this day, 7 years ago, when we hit GO LIVE on The Little Potion Co website!✨

Today, we have had over 75K orders on that very website!🥹🙌

Thank you to every single one of you who have followed, liked, commented, supported, coached, and purchased from our small handmade business!🙏

None of our achievements would be possible without our magic makers, and we’re extremely grateful for you all!💕

Stay tuned, we’re planning a celebration!🥳

Are you buying 3D-printed products for your kids? Because I genuinely don't know how I feel about them.

And I'm really interested to hear what other parents think.

No shade whatsoever to the people designing, making, selling or buying them, we've sold them too.

There are some incredibly clever 3D-printed play accessories out there, they're often really affordable, and some of them are seriously cute.

Especially right now, when families are watching what they spend, I completely understand the appeal.

But here's where I'm torn.

For years we've been having conversations about reducing plastic. We've swapped shopping bags, straws, packaging and all sorts of everyday products for alternatives because we've become more conscious of what we're making and eventually throwing away.

At the same time, 3D printing has exploded in children's play. And we've even loved seeing all the fun pieces and wood them too.

But as we're currently developing new products at The Little Potion Co., it's a conversation we're having behind the scenes too.

We talk a lot about the materials we choose and why.

Biodegradable glitter is a hill we will absolutely die on because our potions are designed to be poured away, so where those ingredients end up really matters to us.

But accessories are different.

If something is designed to be kept and played with for years, does the fact that it's plastic bother you as much?

Does it matter whether it's made from conventional plastic or a bio-based material such as PLA? And or 3D printed.

Would you rather pay more for something made from timber, metal or another material?

Or, particularly in this economy, are affordability, durability and how much use your child will get from it more important?

And the big question…

Are we still as concerned about plastic in children's products as we were a few years ago, or have our priorities shifted?

We haven't made our minds up on this one, which is exactly why I'm asking.

If you're a parent who buys play or sensory accessories, I'd genuinely love to know where you sit on this.

Would 3D-printed plastic put you off buying something or wouldn't you think twice about it?

I don’t think most people making potions with their kids have ever stopped to think about the clean-up.

I mean, why would you? You’re thinking about the fun part. The fizzing, mixing, pouring, and sparkling mess that keeps them entertained.

But after seven years of making potion kits, we think about the after part a lot [ Like an insane amount ]

Because eventually, every potion has to go somewhere.

It gets tipped down the sink, poured onto the grass or emptied into the garden. And anything tiny enough to be suspended in that water is going with it.

That’s what worries us when we see plastic glitter being added by the spoonful to DIY potions and sensory play.

Those beautiful little sparkles are incredibly difficult to separate once they’ve been mixed through water. Nobody is standing there after playtime trying to sieve out hundreds of tiny pieces of glitter and realistically, you couldn’t get them all even if you tried.

Which means the easiest solution happens before the potion is made.

Choose ingredients with the clean-up in mind.

We use certified freshwater biodegradable BioGlitter® in our own potions, but there are so many simple alternatives for potion play at home too. Sugar crystals can sparkle. Edible mica can create incredible swirls. Dried petals and chopped leaves make beautiful nature glitter. Even tiny pieces of rice paper can add colour and texture.

Kids don’t care whether their potion contains conventional plastic glitter.

They care that it fizzes. That it changes colour. That they mixed it themselves and, for a few minutes, completely believed it might actually be magic.

We can give them all of that without adding unnecessary plastic to something we know is eventually going to be poured away.

And once you start thinking about potion ingredients from that perspective, you start looking at that little jar of glitter very differently. Yes it’s cheap, Yes real bioglitter can be more expensive, but there are other options to create the same look.

Save this one for the next time your kids ask to make potions ✨
