Most adults don't use asthma inhalers correctly.

Asthma affects over 2 million Australians, including 1 in 9 children—and if your inhaler technique isn’t quite right, your medicine may not be reaching your lungs, where it needs to work.

Our friendly Capital Chemist pharmacists can help you get the most from your asthma medicines, check your inhaler/puffer technique, and suggest options to improve how the medication is delivered.

We can also help ensure you’re on the right medicines to control your asthma—this may include working out your ASTHMA SCORE to see if your asthma is truly under control, or helping you and your GP develop or update an Asthma Action Plan.

Taking a supplement isn’t a magic wand. Taking supplemental vitamins will only relieve symptoms caused by vitamin deficiencies – not by lifestyle choices.

Most of us meet our vitamin and mineral needs through food. Nature provides vitamins in balanced packages alongside fibre, fats, and proteins that influence absorption and support our overall wellbeing much better than a supplement taken in isolation.

Common supplements you may need:
• Folate and Iodine^ for pregnancy and pre-pregnancy in line with Australian guidelines, even with a healthy diet because requirements increase so quickly after conception.
• B12^ for people following a vegan diet because this crucial vitamin does not exist in plant-based sources.
• Vitamin D and calcium^ for people at risk of osteoporosis, especially if diet and lifestyle are borderline.
• Iron^ for women with heavy menstrual bleeding, to prevent anaemia, especially if iron levels are already low or borderline.
NOTE: Vitamins contain active compounds that have a real impact on your body – taking unnecessary or excessive supplements can be wasteful at best and harmful to your health at worst.

If you have a gap in the variety of foods you consume, have issues with absorption, health complications, or test results showing vitamin deficiency speak to your local Capital Chemist pharmacist about finding the right supplement for your personal needs.

Plan your week with our daily dose administration aids.

Our DAAs provide labelled and organised blister packs to ensure you take the right medicines at the right time, every time. We work with your GP and can incorporate most medications*, prescriptions, and vitamins requested into labelled blister packs. With our Dose Administration Aids, you will:

• Always know if you took your morning pills.
• Never forget to add the vitamins at lunch.
• Know if your loved one has remembered theirs or not.

Dose Administration Aid preparations also provide a good opportunity for a regular MedsCheck with your pharmacist to ask questions and ensure your medicines are working for you. Ask your friendly Capital Chemist pharmacist today to learn more.

A small fee for packing and medication charges apply.
*some medications, such as creams and eye drops, can not be included.

Has winter got you feeling flat? Shorter days, less sunlight, cold and wet – it can start to feel pretty miserable. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Shift the winter blues with simple lifestyle changes
• Keep a solid sleep routine by getting up at the same time every morning.
• Chase the sun and enjoy time outside as early in the day as possible.
• Open curtains and windows to let in light and fresh air daily.
• Fuel your body with nourishing soups, stews, and a balanced diet.
• Prioritise time for activities and people that bring you joy.

Signs it might be more than winter blues
• You feel hopeless, worthless, or disinterested in activities that used to bring joy.
• You have less energy for life, no motivation, or want to sleep all the time.
• Lifestyle changes have no impact on your mood.

If you think it is more than just the winter blues, talk to someone you trust, speak to your GP about a mental health care plan, or ask your local Capital Chemist pharmacist for support and advice.

Winter can be tough on your skin.

If your skin becomes dry, red, itchy or scaly during the colder months, you may be experiencing eczema (atopic dermatitis). You’re not alone—eczema affects more than 16% of Australians. It’s not contagious; it’s an inflammatory skin condition that can flare when triggered.

Why does eczema often get worse in winter ?

• Cold, dry air reduces your skin’s natural moisture.
• Indoor heating and hot showers can strip the skin of essential oils.
• Irritants and allergens such as harsh soaps, dust mites, mould and chlorine can trigger flare-ups.
• Scratching can damage the skin and increase the risk of infection.

Simple ways to help manage winter eczema:
• Apply a moisturiser regularly throughout the day.
• Keep showers and baths lukewarm rather than hot.
• Use recommended eczema treatments, whether over-the-counter or prescribed.
• Seek advice early if your skin becomes weepy, painful or shows signs of infection.
• If itching is affecting your sleep, speak with your pharmacist about treatment options.

For personalised advice on managing eczema and keeping your skin healthy this winter, speak to the friendly team at Capital Chemist Merimbula.
