Live Artist Real Talk 🎡 we asked JaZZella β€’ SONGWRITER β€’ what song ALWAYS works at a live gig? πŸ‘€

Having a few crowd favourites up your sleeve is a great way to break the ice, win the audience over and keep the energy up βœ”οΈ

That doesn’t mean your whole setlist needs to be made up of classics β€” you should still play the music that represents YOU as an artist 🎢

But sprinkling a few songs throughout your set that everyone knows? That can be the secret sauce for keeping people engaged and singing along πŸ™Œ

12/08/2026

The music business is business. πŸŽ€πŸ’Ό

Something a little different today: rapid-fire questions with two working artists β€” R&B/soul original artist Chris and pop singer-songwriter JaZZella β€” digging into what the gigging life is actually like, beyond the three hours you see on stage.

They get into:

🎯 The thing every musician gets wrong β€” thinking talent gets you the gig. Likeability, branding, and even sending a professional email that makes a venue trust you count for more than most players realise.
πŸ“‹ The biggest myth about gigging β€” it's not hard to get gigs; most people just skip the groundwork. Set lists, branding, following up leads β€” get your ducks in a row and you'll be booked.
πŸ”₯ Longevity β€” 15 years in and still in love with it: constant reinvention, vocal care, practice, answering emails on time, and protecting your enjoyment so burnout never wins. (And a word for the naysayers who said the job becomes a drag β€” it hasn't.)
πŸ’‘ The best advice ever received β€” "don't give up" sounds clichΓ© until life actually tests it, and staying creative becomes a choice.
✨ The "I can do this" moments β€” a 14-year-old busker finding hundred-dollar tips in the guitar case, and trading full-time juice-blending for weekend gigs that snowballed into a career.
🎢 The song that always works β€” Valerie. The ultimate ice-breaker; everyone mouths along.
πŸ† Best gig memories β€” Island Vibe festival on Stradbroke Island with the full band, playing with the Australian Idol band, and turning up to "just another gig" that turned out to be headlining an R&B soul festival at a winery in front of 5,000 people.
πŸŒͺ️ Weirdest audience request β€” Darude's Sandstorm… on an acoustic. (Yes, bridge-percussion was attempted.)
⏰ And the big one the audience never sees β€” a three-hour gig is a nine-hour workday: years of craft, gear, booking, liaising, and babysitters organised before a note is played.

Whether you're eyeing your first open mic or deep into the circuit, there's gold in here. Let us know in the comments what you'd ask a full-time musician β€” and come say hi at Mooloolaba Music on the Sunshine Coast, where the gigging community hangs out. 🌞

Back in black. πŸ–€

Chris unboxes something very special that's just landed in store: the limited edition Fender Noir series β€” a strictly limited, made-in-Japan run of all-black matte beauties with striking red accents. All the casters are here: Telecaster, Stratocaster and Jazzmaster, every one dressed head to toe in noir.

What makes them so cool:

πŸ–€ Satin black Noir finish over a two-piece alder body, with black chrome hardware everywhere β€” even the rosewood fretboard carries that dark, moody tint.
πŸ”΄ Killer red details β€” the red edge on the scratchplate and that metallic red Fender logo on the headstock. When the stage lights hit these, they'll glow.
πŸŽ›οΈ Custom-wound Hybrid pickups for that vintage-meets-modern voice across all three models β€” traditional single coil flavour in the Tele and Strat, and those creamy, middy, bitey Jazzmaster pickups (P90-adjacent but very much their own thing) that absolutely love a bit of distortion.
πŸ”’ Vintage-style locking tuners for tuning stability, a black nut, black k***s, even black brass saddles β€” every detail matched.
πŸ› οΈ And a tech's favourite touch: the truss rod adjustment at the headstock end rather than buried in the heel like a traditional vintage build. Easy to service, easy to keep playing right.
🌊 The Jazzmaster rounds it out with its floating tremolo system and adjustable brass saddles in the same blacked-out finish.

Chris β€” proud owner of an all-white Fender himself β€” reckons these are the perfect shadow-side siblings. (His only wish? A black back on the neck too.)

These just arrived, they're a limited run, and they will not hang around. Come see the Noir series in the flesh at Mooloolaba Music on the Sunshine Coast before they're gone. πŸŒ‘

Bass players β€” this one's for you. πŸŽΈπŸ’—
Marcus unboxes a stunning new arrival from the Fender Custom Shop: the 1954 Reissue Precision Bass in Pink Paisley. Strictly limited, seriously beautiful, and we've only got the one in this colour.
What makes it special:
✨ Journeyman Relic finish β€” gorgeous dark tint in the lacquer, beautiful checking on the back, and a worn-in feel that's just lovely in the hands.
πŸͺ΅ '54 Soft V neck profile β€” that authentic vintage Precision feel.
🌸 Pink Paisley foil β€” it looks incredible in the flesh.
πŸ”Š The original-style single coil P-Bass pickup (not the later split-P), as found on the '54–'55 models β€” strung with flatwounds for a super mellow, thumpy vintage thud. Sounds absolutely fantastic.
πŸŽ›οΈ Ashtray covers included β€” collectors can leave them on; players can pop them off and stash them in the case.
And the case candy is half the fun: a beautiful 50s-style tweed hard case with plush lining, certificate of authenticity, swing tag, a leather Custom Shop strap, design guide, Fender picks, and the Shop Floor Traveler β€” the actual spec sheet the Custom Shop builders handled while making this instrument. Ours came through in pink, which is a nice touch. 🩷
We also got a second colour in β€” check out the other unboxing video to see it!
Strictly limited, and this pink one is a single. If you want it to be yours, come in and have a look, or reach out to us. πŸ“ž
