Hi we are Margaret and Peter Gatehouse and togeather we run Hill Top Hives from our property (Edible Garden Gippsland) in the green rolling hills of South Gippsland,Victoria,Australia. We produce pure raw honey,comb and other natural products from the hive. We also produce nucleus hives for sale. Peter has combined 30 years of working in a pathology laboratory as a medical scientist with further studies in "Pests and Diseases of the Honey Bee" to offer a consultancy service to beekeepers,particularly newer beekeepers who may be unsure as to what they are seeing. We work our hives around the farms, forests and gardens of South Gippsland.See if you can spot them!

So in Mirboo North one out of my seven hives came up with one mite in the Alcohol Wash. Sticky Mat for 3 days had a mite fall of 11.
If I had put sticky mats in the 0 AW hives it's likely I would have seen mites on those as well

....and so my Varroa mite journey begins, putting theory into practice.

Micro Bat in the honey house
I inadvertently left the honey house open last night and we had a little visitor.
There are 23 species of micro bats in Victoria.
They weigh around 3 grams.
Due to their insect based diet they play an important role in the ecosystem and they are a natural pest controller!
Aside from that we just love them even when they come into our house occasionally.

There is a lot to learn in beekeeping to keep your colony happy and healthy, especially now with varroa mite knocking on the door.

Bearing this in mind Hill Top Hives is running it's third and final Beginners Beekeeping Course for this season in February.

If you feel there are aspects of beekeeping you need some more knowledge and assistance with or just need help with increasing your confidence with working with bees then this course may be what you need.
