As the water warms up, the kingfish start firing in Sydney Harbour — and one of the most exciting ways to target them is casting soft plastics tight to structure. 🎣

A 5” Daiwa Australia Official Jerkshad rigged on an unweighted 4/0 Gamakatsu worm hook is a deadly option around moored boats, rock walls and other areas where kings are hunting bait.

The unweighted presentation gives the plastic a natural, erratic action and allows it to hang in the strike zone — perfect for drawing aggressive bites from cruising kingfish.

Spring is a great time to target flathead. As the water warms, these fish often push into the upper reaches and shallower areas of harbours and estuaries, making them an ideal target for both boat and shore-based anglers.

To help you make the right lure selection this spring, Max talks us through three of his favourite soft plastics for flathead and why they work.

Spring is here, with temperatures set to push into the low 30s this weekend. Unfortunately, the wind will also be up, which may make conditions a little uncomfortable on the water — but the good news is the fish are there!

The cooler water is making the kingfish a little harder to track down in the harbour, but anglers putting in the time are still finding them. The beaches are fishing well, with most of the better bites coming after dark, while the rocks continue to produce good numbers of luderick and rock blackfish (drummer).

Spring is one of the best times to fish the estuaries with lures, but the changing conditions can really affect where the fish are holding and how they’re feeding. 🎣

As the water starts to warm, baitfish and prawns become more active, fish begin moving into shallower areas and protected bays can heat up faster than deeper/open water.

As conditions begin to change, a few things are worth keeping an eye on:

☀️Find the water that warms first — shallow flats, protected bays and backwaters can heat up quicker than deeper channels.

🦐 Match the spring bait — prawns, small mullet and baitfish become more active, so smaller soft plastics, minnows and prawn-style lures are great options.

💧 Fish transition zones — work the edges between shallow flats and deeper water, w**d and sand, or channels and drop-offs.

💨 Try the wind-blown banks — wind can push bait and food toward one shoreline, creating concentrated feeding areas.

❓ Expect a mixed bag — flathead, bream, whiting, tailor, kingfish, estuary perch and other estuary species can all become increasingly active through spring.
