Flowers + the freedom of being my own boss = living my best life

Cold stratifying seeds. What’s that all about?
Starting seeds early is the answer!

Tricking seeds into thinking they’ve been through a period of cold winter weather so when you take them out of the fridge or freezer, they think it’s spring.

Here’s how I do jt.

Check the seed requirements of the flowers you want to grow to see if this process helps them to germinate more successfully.

I find plants that I start this way and get into the ground earlier have a strong root system and are a more robust and stronger plant.

I may not be picking flowers over winter but I am picking loads of limes 🍋‍🟩

As we have fruit fly restrictions in place I can’t share them so what to do with them all?

🍋‍🟩I’ve been juicing them and freezing it into ice cubes. Perfect to defrost over the year when you need a tablespoon or so for a recipe

🍋‍🟩shop them into wedges and freeze in ziplock bags to go straight into a drink or put into a lime squeezer

🍋‍🟩zest a bunch all at once and freeze the zest in a container for when you need some citrus zest for a recipe

What do you do with excess citrus? Leave your ideas in the comments ⬇️, they would be much appreciated 🙏

5 years ago we took a leap of faith and started a flower farm. We renovated the original little house on our property into a floral studio after a year of working out of our laundry.

We gradually grew in every way ; developing more space to grow, putting up shade houses to improve our flower production and quality, supplying local business to be stockists, developing a website etc.

We couldn’t have done any of it without the amazing support of our local community. Big love and thankyou to you all. 💗

For everyone out there who is just starting on a new journey or dreaming of starting something, don’t give up on your dreams or be discouraged by comparing yourself to others. Start small, you grow and learn along the way, make mistakes and learn from them and slowly find your direction.

Just stay true to you, stay on your own path and do everything with genuine intention. Life is what you make of it. Bring a flower farmer/florist is labour and time intensive and sometimes hard on the body 🥴 but it is so rewarding and soul fulfilling. I’m grateful to be living this life 🙏🌸

It’s time to get ranunculus planted! I’m already excited for spring when these highly productive and oh so beautiful blooms begin to flower in so many gorgeous colours and I can share them with you 🧡💛🩷🤍

I love this time of the year when the beds are all refreshed and ready for planting and all of the seedlings are growing healthily 🌱
Days spent planting out in beautiful autumn weather, sun shining, between 18- 20oC, bird singing, no time line. Bliss!

One of the jobs on the ‘To do’ list now that our flower season has ended is to collect seeds for next season.

Here’s how I collect zinnia seeds. 👆

Did you know…?

Zinnia seeds often won’t grow into an identical copy of the flower they came from because zinnias are usually open-pollinated and highly genetically variable.

Bees and other pollinators may collect pollen from other nearby zinnia varieties resulting in a plant that may have different form, colour, shape and height than the ‘mother’ plant.

As much as I wish these Golden Hour zinnias from would produce identical blooms, I am excited to see what these seeds grow in to next summer!

We’ve just got back from a wonderful and relaxing little ‘end of season’ getaway to Port Elliot.

We stayed in our caravan which is in a magnificent spot right on Horseshoe Bay and walking distance to everywhere you would want to go in Port Elliot. Including , where you have got to have their donut of the month. This month was inspired by the Australian iconic Iced Vovo biscuit. Dinner is always great, try the prawn linguine, it is devine 😋

We enjoyed lovely day trips to Langhorne Creek, enjoying a delicious lunch and coffee and of course tasted and purchased a few wines to stock up the wine fridge at home
And
Hahndorf, where we had a fabulous lunch and enjoyed the wine and beer flights and visited - what a fabulous showroom, shop and cafe. So inspiring to see a SA business thriving and growing and to read about their history and journey.

Our last day was a blast as we went on a .me mystery picnic in the Adelaide Hills, which was a voucher gifted to me for my birthday. Can highly recommend! Fun, well planned and loads of delicious goodies to enjoy when you reach your final destination.

It’s amazing how a week of rest and relaxation can re-energise and inspire! I’ve come home with a mountain of new ideas for next flower season, studio landscaping ideas, studio gift lines and a job list as long as my arm 🫣😆

Now back to plant out hundreds of seedlings, sow hundred more seeds and get my home in order. When can I start painting the kitchen? 😂🌱👩‍🌾

I’ll be sharing some of the happenings soon!
