Fishing Report 25.08.2026

I’m back on deck this week after taking a few days off to attend the AFTA Fishing Tackle Trade Show up in Brisbane. It’s always very exciting to catch up with our current suppliers and check out the cool new stuff that will be available in the coming months, along with meeting new companies who have some new and innovative products hitting the market. Keep an eye out in store over the next several weeks as these new toys will start to filter through!
Enough about that, time for some fishing news! With fishable weather across the Limestone Coast, plenty took the chance to hit the water and chase a few. There was some nice fish caught around the south east, so I’ll get straight into it!

Opportunities to head offshore this week were limited to only a few, but those who did make the effort and got out there found some excellent bottom fishing. Gummy and school shark are still on the chew, both numbers and size are impressive, with fish of both species over 20kg being boated. There has been some nice reef fish too over the last week. Snapper, nannygai, morwong and plenty of others have been boated in varying depths, and both baits and jigs have been getting the nibs. Tuna news at Portland is coming through thick and fast, some really nice fish have been boated over there, so if they’re what you’re after, east is definitely the best bet.

Off the sand has gone bang this past weekend. Gummy shark have had a real good chew right along the coast, with fish being reported from Nene Valley all the way through to Nobles Rocks. Shark to 10kg were on the menu for many, and a variety of baits such as salmon, pillies and squid were all getting the job done. If chasing the salmon is your thing, they are still about the place, but numbers have been hot and cold. One group of anglers landed several nice fish in a late arvo sesh in Red Rock Bay late last week, but post that, it’s been up and down.

Chasing gar is awesome this time of year, if you can get the weather! The numbers are probably the best they’ve been, it’s just the weather that’s stopping us from hitting them more. Our protected bays such as Livingstons, Hutt Bay, Pelican Point and the Petrified Forrest are all reliable, and now there’s a good and steady supply of gents rolling through, we should be good to go when mother nature lets us.

It’s a bit old school, but how much fun is chasing mullet this time of year? A nice soft rod, some peeled prawn or cut pilly, a steady burley stream over the sand and it’s bloody good fun. Some fishos use a float, some prefer a burley sinker on the bottom, but if you get the weather right, a feed of mullet isn’t usually too tricky to track down in most sand holes along the Limestone Coast. I still remember as a kid fishing with my Nan and Pa, a bucket full of mullet and Nan cooking them with salt and pepper in plenty of butter then slap ‘em in between some fresh bread, you couldn’t get too much better I didn’t think!

The inland fishing around Rocklands Reservoir has been pretty good this past week. Cod have been tricky, but there seems to be a few yellas on the chew. Live scoping has definitely helped with narrowing down the search area, but just ‘cause you can see ‘em, it doesn’t mean they’ll eat! Yellas to 50cm are happily eating black plastics, spinnerbaits and stumpjumpers, and don’t be surprised if ya see the odd big trout, XOS bass or a chunky redfin jump all over it too.

The Glenelg River has produced some very nice bream and perch this week, with the lower reaches seeming to be the most reliable. Glenelg River guru Joe Atkins found some excellent fish in the middle of the day down at Nelson, cut whitebait being the most productive, with all fish released after a quick snap. Other anglers have been having similar success, and lures such as Crush City whitebaits, Strike Pro vibes and OBB mussels all getting eaten. Tommy Purcell has nailed some lovely big bream over the sand down in the estuary, and he’s been slaying on the new Berkley Brimz hardbody that has just been re-released after some tweaks in the past few weeks. Mulloway news is virtually non-existent, bar a couple of stray little fellas that were picked up while targeting other things.

Easing winds but sporadic seas over the next week might limit some of the offshore activities, but if we can line it all up, we should be in for a fairly decent week ahead.

Fishing Report 17.08.2026

Quite a pleasant weekend across the Limestone Coast was a joy for locals and tourists. We’re all craving a bit of sunshine and even though it was still cool, the blue skies were very welcome! There was plenty of fishing going on over the weekend, so let’s dive straight in to this weeks fishing report.

The offshore guys were geared up for a big weekend on the bluewater, but that swell on Saturday just didn’t settle enough overnight on Friday. With some pretty serious rollers right across the front, the decision to have the day off was made and I think it was a good one. The sea did settle on Sunday and a few boaties did head out, and the fishing has picked up right where its left off. The bottom fishing this time of year is top notch, and if finding a good mix of species for the table is what you’re after, you can’t go wrong. Shark numbers are still excellent, we’re still seeing good numbers of both gummy and school shark caught anywhere from that 50mt and beyond, and in those same areas, the plethora of bottom fish on offer too is equally as good. You’re likely to come across snapper, nannygai, flathead, terakhi and morwong, all of which are excellent on the plate, but you never know what else may come through out of those depths. Tuna news is patchy, but the last we’ve heard from those targeting them is they seem to be out a little bit wider, that 200mt+ depth is about the mark, but these fish can pop up anywhere, so it doesn’t hurt to have a rod with a skirt on it when you’re zipping around out there.

The inshore fishing has been good again when that weather has allowed. We’re still seeing some nice sharks over 20kg boated out there, and there has been a whisper of a snapper or two landed in 10mt of water already, which if true, is sure to set tongues wagging. The story has been much the same as the past month or more, if you get the weather, the fishing has been excellent. A few fishos are reporting schools of salmon, gar and pike are sniffing up the burley trail, so fresh bait and/or a few extras for the table are definitely on the cards.

Off the sand this week, the numbers of salmon have slowed down a little bit compared to previous weeks, but we did still see some solid fish in the evenings from Carpenter Rocks, Canunda and the Oil Rig. The Beachport Salmon Hole has been a bit quiet this past week, the bait fishos have found fish without too much trouble, but the numbers are a bit patchy it seems for the lure guys. We’ve seen a few shark off the beaches this week, both gummy and school shark, and I’ve heard reports from Nobles Rocks, Piccininni, Browns Bay, Nene Valley and Canunda, so they’re not only in one area, they’re quite spread out.

It hasn’t taken long and I’ve had squid reports already! Once we see some continuity in the weather and prolonged periods of flatter seas, the clarity will return to Livingstons Bay and we know the squid are there. It’s not just Livingstons though that fishes well for squid, Pelican Point, Blackfellows Caves, Port Mac Breakwater and Hutt Bay are all spots that regularly produce, and as I touched on earlier, it’s just the weather and water clarity that we need to improve.

The Glenelg River has a bit of colour to it now, a darker tannin has hit the lower reaches after the rains a few weeks ago, but that hasn’t stopped the fishing. Fishos chasing the bream have found good numbers down the bottom on a mixture of cut crab and prawns, and if lures are more your thing, darker coloured plastics and hard bodies are getting the bites, focus on the drop offs and deeper channels, that’s where the fish seem to be at the moment. Perch are still throughout the river, vibing the schools is productive, as is trolling galaxia minnows, just think deep when the water has a bit of colour. The mulloway news is thin, I have only heard of a handful of smaller fish the last few days, but hopefully this week the big boys come out to play.

The forecast for the coming week looks like we’ll see a bit of rain through the middle of the week and into the weekend, and unfortunately the wind and swell also start to pick up also. Its looking like the river, inland and salmon fishing will be the best bet, so hopefully the fish turn it on!

Fishing Report 11.8.2026

Northerlies over the weekend were excellent for those fishing off the sand, but those hoping to head offshore while the swell was down had a tough time. Luckily for us here on the Limestone Coast, there is so many options for us, we never have to miss out!
As I touched on, the offshore fishing was tricky, while the swell did settle compared to where it was, the wind puffed up and made things tricky. There was a window or two late last week which were taken advantage of. Shark, snapper and other bottom fish are back on the menu, and depths from 15mt and beyond have been the go-to areas. Tuna news has again been to the east of Port Mac, but if conditions do allow, there was excellent numbers of school tuna just inside the shelf, so that’s always an option too.

Salmon numbers have remained good again this week, with the sea settling down a bit, the dawn and dusk bite times were by far the most productive. Bait fishos found fish in the middle of the day in the Salmon Hole, Canunda and Cape Banks, but as soon as the sun started to move, the numbers become more concentrated, and the lure anglers were going a-fish-a-cast there for a bit! Size has been up and down, but the average fish seems to still be around that 1 kilo mark, so perfect for the smoker, or to recycle into a shark!

Chasing gar was on the radar for many over the weekend. Getting that swell down and the northerly puffing over your shoulder is as close to ideal as you’ll get for the gardies. Carpenter Rocks, Blackfellows Caves, Cape Douglas and inside the Port Mac Breakwater have all produced, and both the boaties and waders have found themselves some good fish to take home. Mullet, tommies, salmon trout and even the odd silver trev have been caught while on the gar hunt, so you just never know what you’ll come across.

Fishing in the Glenelg over the weekend was good for those targeting bream and perch. Some pretty serious samples of both species over 40cm hit the decks, and a good mix of lures and baits got the bites. If lures are your thing, the Outback Breamer mussel vibes have been dynamite, or for the baitos, prawn and cut crab are yielding results. Mulloway news is a bit steady on, there has been a couple of fish that I know of in the lower reaches on big plastics, one 80cm fish caught by Craig on an 8 inch Keitech Easy Shiner, then a 1+ metre fish that Matt Bell landed under the bridge, but as we transition to the new moon later this week, I’d hope we see them fire up and have a bite over the weekend.

The wind and swell are starting to back off from the back end of this week, then looking forward to next week, it settles even more. This weekend might be another river, salmon or gar opportunity before we can hopefully get offshore again next week.
