VR N Scale Models

VR N Scale Models Victoria Railways (VR) (and other) N scale (1:160) models This included equipment acquired from the private companies that built the first railways in Victoria.

The Victorian Railways (VR), trading from 1974 as VicRail, was the state-owned operator of most rail transport in the Australian state of Victoria from 1859 to 1983. The first railways in Victoria were private companies, but when these companies failed or defaulted, the Victorian Railways was established to take over their operations. The Victorian Railways operated a wide variety of locomotives and rolling stock to provide passenger and goods services. From Wikipedia.

The Z type carriages were air-conditioned, steel body passenger carriages constructed by the Victorian Railways from 1957 and used on the railways of Victoria, Australia. This class of carriages consisted of thirteen AZ first class carriages with closely spaced, smaller windows and thirteen BZ second class carriages with wider spaced, larger windows. A number of carriages were placed onto standard gauge bogies for use on interstate trains such as the iconic Spirit of Progress.

Preliminary models of both AZ and BZ carriage bodies have been uploaded to Shapeways. No undercarriage is yet included with these models, but can be readily constructed using styrene sheets.

Taking leave today due to COVID-like symptoms (but testing negative), I have started up-skilling on a new CAD program, OpenSCAD. It is slow work, but the results (VR E class underframe shown below) appear solid.

For those who are interested, I have uploaded the vector art file for a pair of T-TRAK single modules to Thingiverse. This design is intended for cutting in 6 mm plywood (or equivalent) material and allows for "no-tool" assembly using hobby glue (although a hammer and wood block may help when connecting pieces together). Avoid performing any "trial fit" before you are ready to glue the module together as this merely loosens the fit between module pieces.

it s intended that this design is equivalent to commercial T-TRAK module offerings available from Masterpiece Modules and CMR Products.

The prototype laser-cut T-Trak double module arrived today and went together perfectly. Even though it looks like the original plywood sheet was a little bowed, it has still been able to be assembled using just wood glue and without tools. I am very happy with this first prototype.

To try something different, I have spent some time while in lockdown this week doing some CAD for laser cut T-TRAK modules. I hope to share some photos within the next week or so of the final product.

See https://sites.google.com/view/australian-t-trak for more information about Australian T-TRAK module standards.
