SHANNON LEWIS.

Shannon started working with clay in 2016, fulfilling a decades long interest in
pottery and desire to start making. With an analytical bent she is drawn to the
science of clay and glazes, where there is a lifetime of exploring, learning and
discovering waiting.

As a potter Shannon is influenced by landscape, focusing on simple forms and
design and being led by the visual cues around her for colour and texture - from the
coastlines, the night sky, the ocean, and the bush.

At Clay Cartel Shannon is aiming to create an environment where other potters can
also explore the inspirations and influences they bring to their work with clay.

SIAN THOMAS.

Living in the Blue Mountains for the last 28years gives Sian the inner peace she
needs to allow her ideas to flow. Very early in her life she was playing tea parties
with her dolls. Her family had a collection of tiny teapots and cups and saucers made from china – just perfect for a little girl’s tea parties. So of course that led to her choosing to study ceramics to learn how to make a perfect teapot. She studied at East Sydney Technical College, which is now Called The National Art School.

Later, as she began setting up her own home she was always looking for a butter
dish, which would fit current butter packs. Not having any luck she began to realise
the only way would be to make one. Since then she has enjoyed creating all kinds of
kitchenware that will look beautiful as well as being functional. Today her real
passion is making teapots and looking for the perfect shape. “I like to think my
teapots are full of hot tea every day”.

Her work is now fired with the help of the solar energy making her work more
sustainable for the planet.

Allison worked for over 30 years styling and designing interiors, room sets,
homewares, food shoots and ad campaigns. During that time, she developed a
passion for vessels and decorative ceramic forms and started studying and working
with clay in 2015. After retirement in late 2020 Allison was finally able to pursue this
love on a full time basis and completed a Diploma of Ceramics.

Everything she does is black or white. The foundations of her works are wheel formed but then she adds, alters and attaches elements to achieve interesting pieces.

“There is a connection between nature and design in my work. Their surfaces must
have visual or textural interest, matt, glossy, rough or smooth. As a perfectionist I
avoid perfectionism in my ceramic process. They are not perfect. They are functional, They just are.”

Allison’s innate sense of style shines through in her work making her pieces unique
and highly collectable.

Therese has been working with Clay for over 30 years. She is currently working from her studio in Wollongong NSW. Her work is inspired by Coastal land forms, native bush flowers and the ocean. Her pieces are initially thrown on the wheel to form unique shapes before drawing, carving and impressing textures into the surface of the clay to create beautiful one off pieces. In addition to her own pottery practice.
Therese is a much respected teacher of her craft to regular and one-off students wanting to learn the art of ceramics.

Therese will be among 10 potters displaying and selling their work in Tunnel 1 at the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability in Waverton on the 31st August and 1st of September 2024.

We look forward to seeing you there! ✨

25/08/2024

Bruna opened Glaze Galleria in Drummoyne in May 2021 as a pottery studio and a
gift shop, specialising in handmade ceramics. Like many people, the pottery wheel and making ceramics was initially her way of tuning out for a while. “Now I think about pots all the time! What should I make next? Should I carve it? What glaze to try? I truly love it!” she says.

“Pottery is challenging, creative, functional, reusable and very satisfying. Clay therapy is real - clay making is mesmerising and focuses your mind. You end up feeling relaxed and rejuvenated! You will learn to embrace all that is not perfect, just
the best it can be.

The process does take quite a while. People are often surprised that it can take up
to 4 weeks to complete a piece. It's worth it! Final pieces are unique! Clay takes a while to get to know - it’s all about being in the moment, learning new things and slowing down”.

Bruna’s enthusiasm is catching and her work is exceptional.
